[July 6 - 10 // July 13 - 17] Moganshan Summer Camp (Ages 11-17)
Just three hours from Shanghai is a slice of pure serenity: the rolling hills and clear air of Moganshan. During colonial days it served as a countryside retreat for Shanghai’s urban elite. Today, the lush bamboo forests provide an escape for modern-day adventurers looking to leave the city behind.
Campers will experience life in an idyllic mountain village, taking part in a wide variety of fun and challenging activities designed to provide a glimpse into the world of a unique rural community.
Raft Building Challenge
In this engineering challenge, you will be tasked with planning, designing, constructing, and staying afloat on a raft. The challenge will culminate in a head-to-head raft race to test each team’s creation. Who will sink and who will succeed?
Zou’N’Go Adventure Race
As a final team challenge to end the week, participants will complete an exciting adventure race while discovering what life is like in our local village. The race will orient teams all across the village to complete missions, solve riddles, interact with locals, and have fun! Challenges will include secret actor plants, inter-team challenges, creative missions, and more!
Hiking
Beginning our day with stretches and a Leave No Trace talk, we will then head out into the bamboo forests and hike up the slopes of Mount Mogan. Along the way we’ll stop at a countryside guesthouse for lunch before heading up to a small temple near the peak, where we’ll be able to take in the entire valley below.
Village Activities
Time-honored traditions are still alive and well in Moganshan, and campers will engage with local residents of the village as they learn these traditional practices. For our farm to table activity, students will head to the fields to help with seasonal tasks and harvest vegetables and bamboo shoots, then cook up a few tasty dishes together. Our beloved local partner will teach campers how to weave traditional baskets from dried bamboo. Our trebuchet challenge, while it may not be considered traditional, presents a fun challenge culminating in a water balloon showdown!
BBQ
Celebrate an amazing week of fun and friendship with a BBQ and fire-roasted s’mores on the last evening of our camp! We’ll round off the evening with a gratitude session, and awards for the week.

We will keep parents and participants updated on the situation in the lead-up to the trip.
Health & Safety
How are you managing the potential risk with COVID-19?
We are taking a two-pronged approach to mitigating the risk posed by COVID-19. First, and most importantly, we are implementing a thorough pre-camp screening policy, to verify that all attending participants, staff and local partners are not considered at risk of having contracted COVID-19. As a part of this, all participants will be required to fill out a health waiver, which will be sent in advance of the trip, along with additional supporting documentation. Second, while on program, we are instituting a number of hygiene, activity facilitation and training measures aimed at limiting any chance of contagion. To request a more detailed policy, please get in touch with us at education@thehutong.com and we would be happy to provide more information.
What is your health and safety policy?
We are continuously communicating, updating and assessing our risk management procedures in order to provide an exceptional and adventurous experience in a safe environment. We also take a dynamic approach to safety and are continuously analyzing and evaluating our protocols to keep pace with the industry’s highest standards. All of our guides have First Aid training, in many cases Wilderness Advanced First Aid certification, and will have undergone numerous internal trainings.
Do you provide travel medical insurance?
As a licensed travel operator, we provide standard liability insurance as required by Chinese law. As this insurance is quite basic, we require all trip participants to have their own medical insurance should an emergency situation arise.
