Discover Inner Mongolia - An Adventure in Nomads’ Land

Our Hutong Education team likes nothing more than bringing students to the far flung regions of China, and one of our favourite places to go (and actually the first place outside of Beijing we took students to all the way back in 2010) is the grassy plains of Inner Mongolia! 

Inner Mongolia’s boundless landscapes are as awe-inspiring as they are beautiful. The steppe, once the land of Genghis Khan, gave rise to Mongolia’s nomadic culture, an ancient way of life that is fast vanishing. Our Inner Mongolia programs take participants into the heart of this unique environment, one that faces serious challenges as China develops. Going back to nature, we sleep in traditional yurts under skies filled with stars, hike up hills for breathtaking grassland views, and try traditional nomad sports like wresting, archery and horse-racing.

Each of our school programs in Inner Mongolia have been unique in their own way, and we love to tailor to the needs of the student we take there, however there have definitely been some common themes. Each of our expeditions have tested participants’ tenacity and taken them beyond their perceived comfort zones, all in the spirit of a safe, controlled physical challenge that pushes our personal growth.  Spending time out on the grassland also exposes us to the concept of living in harmony with the environment, local customs, and the world as a whole. Throughout each journey on the steppe, we examine issues like urbanization, renewable energy, rural to urban migration, and responsible tourism.

Meet one of our experienced Program managers is Marissa Kennedy!

Marissa has been leading educational programs in Inner Mongolia for the past three years.  With 12 programs under her belt as well as two research trips, Marissa has come to appreciate the unique culture and landscape of the nomadic grasslands. 

Her favourite moments on program include biking in the grasslands as well as experiencing the challenges and activities of the Nadaam festival including archery and Mongolian style wrestling!  Her favourite part of Inner Mongolia however is the sky--big and blue with clouds so close you feel like you can almost touch them!
