[July 27-31] Northern Hills Summer Camp (Ages 9-12)

TheHutong Edu TheHutong 2020-09-02

Mountains surround Beijing and extend into Hebei province, providing extraordinary scenery, limitless hiking and outdoor opportunities, and fascinating mountain villages where people have maintained a traditional way of life for centuries.

This is the setting of The Hutong’s Northern Hills summer camp adventure; a trip geared towards having fun, exploring this beautiful area outside of Beijing, and encouraging a spirit of adventure and discovery!

We will organise your bus transfers, food, entry tickets, book the accommodation, and provide a heap of fun!

Olympic Sailing Center

In order to give ourselves a break from the hot summer weather, we will head to the Olympic Sailing Center to cool down for the day! Campers will be given the opportunity to try their hand at a variety of water activities including sailing, kayaking, stand up paddle-boarding, and raft buiding!

Camping and s’mores

When was the last time you slept under the beautiful night sky? We’ll set up our tents at our scenic outdoor base campsite, and round off our day with a bonfire, roasted marshmallows, and falling asleep under the stars.

Great Wall Hike

Beat the crowds and experience a fun, challenging hike along a much less visited section of the Great Wall. Taking in incredible vistas and supporting one another to reach new heights, we’ll also hear some stories about the Great Wall and some of the characters who lived, loved and fought here, earning themselves a place in local history.

Outdoor Games

Throughout the week we will take advantage of the open spaces and get ourselves deep into some big Mission Impossible, Capture the Flag, and “grass Olympics” type games. These are what make summer camp feel like camp! Running around, strategizing with your own teammates, competing in a series of challenges, and having fun!

798 Sculpture Hunt

Heading back into the city on the final day of our camp, we will have one last stop in Beijing’s famous art district. While here campers will work in teams to hunt down some of the most interesting and peculiar sculptures that make their home in 798, all while learning something of the history of the place.

We will keep parents and participants updated on the situation in the lead-up to the trip.

Health & Safety

How are you managing the potential risk with COVID-19?

We are taking a two-pronged approach to mitigating the risk posed by COVID-19. First, and most importantly, we are implementing a thorough pre-camp screening policy, to verify that all attending participants, staff and local partners are not considered at risk of having contracted COVID-19. As a part of this, all participants will be required to fill out a health waiver, which will be sent in advance of the trip, along with additional supporting documentation. Second, while on program, we are instituting a number of hygiene, activity facilitation and training measures aimed at limiting any chance of contagion. To request a more detailed policy, please get in touch with us at education@thehutong.com and we would be happy to provide more information.

What is your health and safety policy?

We are continuously communicating, updating and assessing our risk management procedures in order to provide an exceptional and adventurous experience in a safe environment. We also take a dynamic approach to safety and are continuously analyzing and evaluating our protocols to keep pace with the industry’s highest standards. All of our guides have First Aid training, in many cases Wilderness Advanced First Aid certification, and will have undergone numerous internal trainings.

Do you provide travel medical insurance?

As a licensed travel operator, we provide standard liability insurance as required by Chinese law. As this insurance is quite basic, we require all trip participants to have their own medical insurance should an emergency situation arise.
