The coupled soil-vegetation-hydrology processes and their mechanisms play key roles in understanding the interaction mechanisms between different spheres of the Earth system. Such two-way coupling exists at multiscales ranging from leaf stomata and ecosystems to watersheds and regions, and its major controlling factors change with spatial scales. This article reviews the research advances in coupled soil-vegetation-hydrology processes, discusses the relevant scaling methods and modeling approaches, and envisions research directions.
