在当代工笔画坛,林聪文是个独特的存在。尽管其笔下超现实的梦境编织不乏意趣相同的同道者,但能将内在的诗意如此唯美、冷峻地尽情宣泄的并不算多数。无疑可视为一位隐忍的守望者。世混浊莫吾知,人心之不可谓兮!在躁动莫名的都市,甘于寂寞之道,默默追寻安放真性的林泉之心,实属不易。江心洲 | 纸本设色 | 49 x 230cm,2017 Island in the River | Color on Paper |49 x 230cm,2017以“重奏曲”命名本次画展,意在描述林聪文画面中的旋律迷踪。观其作品,宛若八音迭奏, 总有无尽的创造力能将多个不同空间或虚构或真实的物象神奇地置于同一画面中,通过看似矛盾的布局、不符合逻辑的存在,表现出个人内心隐秘的灵光,呈现出一种精神上的反思。此既是多元物象、空间的解构,又为思想、情感和技法的重置。幽园幻境 | 纸本设色 | 228 x138cm,2019 Realm of Serenity and Mirage | Color on Paper | 228 x138cm,2019在当代工笔画领域,超现实的语言操演颇具代表性。此种来自西方世界的绘画思潮曾对中国绘画产生过重要影响,但缘于此对艺术家的笔墨驾驭技巧和人文素养有着更高要求——不小心便会沦入矫揉造作、故弄玄虚的魔道——对此艺术冒险,艺术家需要小心面对。林聪文以足够的才华和能力使其能将超现实的意象组合演绎成自己独特的绘画风格。其光怪陆离的意境营造亦真亦幻,恍惚无常,犹如迷宫一样唤醒观者的好奇心。尽管对此种神秘意象的解读注定徒然无解,但我们可以想见此必然是画者心性的抒写。林聪文画作中常出现椅子、古木、麋鹿、太湖石等个性化意象,其经过个人审美趣味组合一起后,总能产生奇妙的视觉效果。桥 | 纸本设色 | 69 x 240m,2021Bridge | Color on Paper | 69 x 240m,2021意象的符号化虽使其作品多了超现实的晦涩感,却强化了作品的隐喻性和精神力量。正如卡西尔所说:“人不是生活在一个单纯的物质宇宙中,而是生活在一个符号宇宙之中。语言、神话、艺术和宗教是这个符号宇宙的各部分,他们是织成符号之网的不同丝线,是人类经验的交织之网。”林聪文正是用这种符号化的艺术语言,以其开放的观念与思辨能力,将作品中的物象和技法不露痕迹地实现重组与转换,从而营造出一个寓意丰满、梦境照进现实的艺术世界,既升华了工笔画的意境,又实现了工笔画当代性的观念转换。他的符号冒险消解了以往工笔画的常见图式,意象的隐喻则使作品在内心世界的窥视中更加具备当代观念艺术的先锋特质,有心无意间赋予作品新的内涵。矛盾集合体 | 纸本设色 | 146 x 88cm,2019 Anomaly Conglomerate | Color on Paper | 146 x 88cm,2019林聪文的工笔画中最重要的一点就是其画面中总有让人茫然无措的不确定感。太明白的东西容易索然无味,其画面超现实的漂浮感则有着可神通不可语达、可意会不可言传的妙处。作为观者,好似在现实与虚幻、时间与空间之中游离,说其虚妄荒诞也好,神秘莫测也罢,林聪文总能将其细腻的心思、敏感的个性通过奇幻的画面叙事带给观众,从具象到抽象,从意象到心象,他精心描绘的梦境唯美中透着淡淡哀愁,虚妄中透着空谷足音。

Lin Congwen is a unique entity in the current Gongbi painting scenery. Even though many Gongbi painters are exploring similar surrealism imagery, Lin is one of the few who can bring out sublime poetry, reflective emotion, and acute observation from within. He is an invisible warden. He feels like this world is so chaotic and corrupted that it is impossible to know what others think of him, almost feeling like no one can understand the path he pursued. When looking at Lin’s painting, it feels like a symphony playing right in front of you. The title Repertoire was inspired by this sensation. His painting is a maze of discordant and harmony. There is unlimited potential combining fictitious or substantial objects and spaces in his fictional painting world. He reveals his inner vision by putting paradox composition and illogical being in one picture frame. This kind of expression is also Lin’s spiritual contemplation. His painting practice is a process of multidimensional deconstruction. This innovative painting practice from the western world was inspirational to many Chinese painters. However, excessive use of this visual element will lead to a sense of shallowness. In the worst case, an obsession of bluffing the emptiness, creating meaningless content. Therefore, to masterfully use this expression, an artist should possess more than a sufficient level of brush handling skill and cultural understanding of their subject matter. When one is exploring this adventurous passage, one should be extra cautious. Beyond mere handling, he can deduce his painting style with his ingenious combinations of imageries. His painting is like a labyrinth that can awaken everyone’s curiosity. Inside this labyrinth, the sceneries and impressions are just bizarre. It feels legitimate and fantasy-like at the same time. Everything is ever-changing. The effort to understand his mystical imageries determined to fruitless results. Painting is a mental mirror of a painter. Therefore, it is possible to peek into Lin’s ethos. The ordinary imageries that appear in his painting are personified chairs, withered trees, elaphure, and Taihu stone. By combining them with his exclusive sense of aesthetics. At the same time, those imageries strengthen the metaphors and psyche power that embody in his painting. Once Cassirer said:“Human beings do not live in a simple material universe. Human beings live in a symbolic universe. Language, myth, art, and religion are all part of this symbolic universe. They are the threads that form this web of symbols. They are also the threads that form the web of human experiences. Lin Congwen practices this approach of symbolized painting language with his mindfulness and critical assessment. He seamlessly modifies his painting techniques to transfigure those imageries in his painting. He wants to create a visual world that is full of metaphors, a world in which fantasy and reality intertwine with each other. With such an approach, Lin exalts the tranquility of Gongbi painting, while exploring the experimental venue. The symbols in his paintings nullify the traditional Gongbi painting impression. Privy symbols are the agents of Lin’s audacious adventure. It is a presentation of his inner world, advocates for new meaning with true spirits instead of stern intention.

The most impressive aspect of Lin’s Gongbi painting is the ambiguity that feels a bit fidgety. Obvious imageries might lead to senseless boredom. In Lin’s painting world, he wants to achieve a sense of being there without being there, a sense of understanding the metaphysic but you cannot elaborate upon that sensation. Such feeling can only come from the dreaminess of surrealism. While looking at his painting, you feel like wandering the line of reality and fantasy, phasing through time and space. You could describe his paintings as illusory, absurd, mysterious, and incomprehensible. At the same time, you cannot help but notice his attentive observation, noticing his sensitive personality which brings marvelous visual and narrative experience to his audience. From concrete impression to abstract expression, he is painting his ideal dreamy realm of melancholy. From imagery to mental reflection, he is painting a quiet but illusory valley where you can hear your footsteps. This concludes the introduction.
