• Member, Experimental High School Debate Team

Met weekly with team to practice debating and prepare for competitions

Competed at twelve competitions, contributed to team wins at the 2012 Luxun Cup and the semi-final round of the 2013 Beijing Debate Association's competition


• Manager and Founder, Shi Yuan Café

Established café with three other co-managers to create a comfortable place for students to study

Served drinks to students daily and held special events, such as celebrations and cultural forums

Interviewed sanitation workers and residence managers, visited trash transitional station and classification center to find ways of improving trash classification in Xicheng district, Beijing.

Visited Shi Jing Shan senior center every Sunday, talked with senior citizens, took them out for walks, cleaned their living building and dining hall before festivals.

Rebuilt a book house in Shuren primary school in Shijingshan district, organized book-reading events with children and teachers.

在“小小鸟”打工互助热线工作,帮助外来务工者通过合法途径维权。

每两周工作一次,学习有关外来务工、法律及非政府组织的知识。


•垃圾分类的研究研究组成员

采访西城区的环卫工人和住宅区经理,参观垃圾处理站和分类中心以期找到提高垃圾分类效率的方法。

Describe two or three of your current intellectual interests and why they are exciting to you. Why will Cornell's College of Arts and Sciences be the right environment in which to pursue your interests? (Please limit your response to 647/650 words.)


It's Thursday, so I rush to the newsstand to grab the latest copy of Southern Weekly, the one paper in China that is famous for critical editorials about government policies. This week's cover story discusses how the policy that limits the number of houses a family can own has sparked a rash of divorces across the country.


As I ride the bus home I carefully read the commentary. With my interest in political science, I'm curious to know how the policy can control purchasing power of millions of people. With my interest in psychology, I wonder how the policy will affect people's attitudes towards their salary, their homes and their family. Next year at college these are the exactly the

kinds of things I want to study. Cornell's excellent resources in the field of comparative politics and the mix of theory and practice in the psychology department make it the right environment for me to pursue my interests.


To understand society and people in it, I believe one must study politics. While the word “government” might not be stamped on every bridge and road, its mark is there. Without government, no society can develop and flourish. To understand society and the people in it, I should understand how it influences the world. I hope to become a lawyer one day, and the study of politics can teach me to understand power structures and to think critically, which are both essential tobeing a lawyer. When I read about political issues, I feel as if I am cleaning a window with a rag. Through the hard and cold glass, I see society more clearly.


I know my passion for politics will flourish at Cornell. I'm particularly interested in studying comparative politics, because I believe that understanding the systems of other countries is the best way to see how to improve one's own. In the Department of Government, I see myself taking classes like "American Political Thought: from Madison to Malcolm X" to obtain a better understanding of why American politicians always insist liberty for every individual. Classes like "Comparative Foreign Policy" would expand my knowledge about global political issues like war, humanitarian intervention, and foreign aid.


My love of politics and law inevitably leads to my interest in psychology. Why do different countries have different political systems? Why didn't people during the Cultural Revolution stand up for freedom and challenge the government that was bullying them? How do different types of government affect individual decision-making? I often ask myself about people's thought processes and the reasoning behind their behaviors. I want to learn how the different parts of our brain function and how they work together to form thoughts and emotions.

In Cornell's Department of Psychology, I will be able to begin answering some of these questions through theoretical courses like "Hormones and Behavior" and "Introduction to Social Psychology," which would give me an excellent basis for learning how the brain works. The Psychology Field Practicum would provide me with personal experience at a local mental health agency or school, so that I might learn about psychology outside of my textbooks. Maybe I will be able to conduct my own experiments by taking part in the Undergraduate HonorsProgram in Psychology, perhaps exploring how emotion forms or how the subconscious affects decisions.

我心里很清楚,我对政治的热情会在康奈尔延续下去。我尤其对比较政治学非常感兴趣,因为我相信理解其他国家的政治系统是提高本国政治系统的最佳途径。在政治系,我可以想象,我参加诸如“美国政治思想:从麦迪逊到马尔科姆•艾克斯”这样的课程,能更好地理解为什么美国的政客总是坚称每个个体都是自由的。或是参加诸如“比较外交政策”这样的课程来扩展我对战争、人道主义干涉及对外援助等全球政治问题的了解。


我对政治和法律的热爱不可避免地让我对心理学也产生了兴趣。为什么不同的国家有不同的政治体系?为什么人们在文化大革命期间不奋起反抗争取自由?不同类型的政府如何影响个体的决策过程?我经常反思人们思考的过程及行为背后的缘由。我想学习我们大脑的不同部分是如何运作的,它们又是如何协同形成思想和情绪的。


在康奈尔的心理学系,学完诸如“荷尔蒙和行为”“社会心理学简介”等课程,我便可以开始回答其中的一些问题了。这些课程为我今后学习大脑工作原理打下一个非常好的基础。心理学实习课则会让我有机会在当地的心理健康中心或学校中获得第一手经验,这样我就能学习到书本外的知识。或许我还能参加本科心理学荣誉项目,开展我自己的实验,或许探索一下情绪的形成过程和潜意识是如何影响决策的。


我知道,康奈尔极具启发的学术氛围会帮助我理解政府政策背后的初衷,以及个体行为背后的基础。但是老实说,我也很期待一些我尚未了解的领域。我或许会对日本文化、流体动力学甚至宗教研究感兴趣。不管我的兴趣是什么,我知道康奈尔文理学院都能提供给我很多课堂内外的机会,学习那些我已经很感兴趣或尚未了解且能激发我的好奇心的学科。
