Tingbudong ChengduExpat 2020-02-24

          🇨🇳

It is certainly a strange time to be in China...  The streets are deserted, stores are closed, returning to work has been postponed, and most people are staying inside to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus.

If you're still thinking about leave, or wandering if staying here is the right thing to do, our article "Should I stay or should I go now?" could help. If you're decided on to staying here but are getting a little restless, check out our recently posted: post.

So you have more time on your hands, so why don't you set yourself some goals, and even start executing them. For example, learning Chinese!
... Or make the most of the booze shops staying open, and deep dive into cocktail making on YouTube.

If you are looking to learn a little local lingo, while you're staying inside, here's a list that will help you change from tingbudong to tingdedong:

Chinese Learning Apps

There are a ton of good Chinese learning Android and iOS apps out there. However, their usefulness is usually limited to the goals and habits of those who are using them. The key to learning with these apps is to find what works for you, and what doesn’t. Accordingly, you can then separate these apps by their strengths and weaknesses, their purposes and their main training targets.

How do you get the most out of your apps?

The big secret is discipline. When you first download an app, you get really obsessed about it, but then the magic often stops. The best way to make your app-learning sustainable is to keep a time-limit on it. We also recommend not arming yourself with a hundred different apps and trying to use them all. Choose one area to focus on each week (or day, if you like), and download or purchase the apps that are specialized in that aspect.

If you are looking to brush up on your Chinese knowledge and access to terminology, look no further than apps like  Pleco. This app allows you to either write in the stroke order of Chinese characters and get a definition or even speak It into the app and it will convert this into the characters and provide you with the pinyin and definition. The basic verions is free.
