Viral LED Screens in Southwest China
🛸
Amazing LED screens in Chengdu and Chongqing have been going viral 👇
Chengdu
Recently, a gigantic 90-degree curved LED digital signage installation, set above a
retail space close to Sino-Ocean TaiKoo Li, went viral online and even became a hotspot. The screen is showing different 3D-effect videos, including a Star Trek-like spaceship emerging from the screen to
the space in front of it.
Best viewed from an angle, the glasses-free ‘3D’ video wall has been a top-five trending topic on Sina Weibo, a Chinese social media network that is similar to Twitter, during a Chinese national holiday. The effect of depth, which gives the illusion that the spaceship is flying out of the building is achieved without special devices and glasses but can only be viewed from a certain angle.

The curved, L-shaped PH8mm LED video wall in the Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li shopping district is more than 900 sqm in size and made with LianTronic FS8 Outdoor Fixed LED. The screen is 63.68m in length (there is a 47.2m north-facing screen, plus a 2.048m curved corner, and a 14.432m east-facing screen) and 14.336m in height.
Online video of the Chengdu installation has been appearing on Western social media during the last week, with China digital marketing expert Ashley Dudarenok enthusiastically captioning a smartphone video on YouTube video with the words: “This is the hottest 3D LED screen in China these days. It was unveiled last week on the side of a local mall in Chengdu.”
We must agree, it looks pretty dope from the right angle, certainly at night.
Seoul
Social media users have compared the video wall to landmark Samsung 8K digital signage in Seoul, South Korea, where video activations from creative agency d’strct have included a giant anamorphic wave and a giant toy.

Chongqing
Just a week after Chengdu's LED screen went viral, another one Chongqing popped up. At a Guanyinqiao shopping mall, a 3D spaceship 'flies' out of a large LED screen, a scene which apparently can be seen every night from 8 to 10:50pm.
The city has unveiled plans aimed at jazzing up the Liziba station even further by adding a giant, 300-square-meter LED screen to the entrance which will make it appear as though the train is passing through a “hot pot,” Chongqing’s signature culinary method.

On Weibo, netizens are aghast, writing that the effect looks “terrible,” like a “disaster zone,” and have likened the whole plan to “drawing legs on a snake” (画蛇添足), a Chinese idiom for overdoing it.
