The museum is located by the sea in Beilun district, Ningbo city, and opened to the public on October 16, 2014. With floor space of 40987 square meters, it is the largest national museum with the theme of port culture, and services as a complex for exhibition, education, collection, scientific research, tourism and international exchanges.
博物馆位于宁波市北仑区春晓滨海新城，于2014年10月16日建成开馆。建筑面积40987平方米，港口博物馆是我国规模最大、等级最高的大型港口专题博物馆。它集展示、教育、收藏、科研、旅游、国际交流等功能于一体。
The museum was designed by Mr. Cheng Taining, an academician of the China Academy of Engineering, who got his inspiration from conch shells
这座博物馆由中国工程院程泰宁院士设计。这个建筑设计从海螺中获取灵感。
The architecture of the museum combines a modern streamline shape, metal materials and landscape design with port characteristics, in order to showcase its sense of scenic and technology and a dynamic image of Ningbo city
以极富现代气息的流线造型和体现科技感的金属材质塑造富有海洋气息的流畅形体，并结合富有港口特色的景观设计，将海洋文化和港口文化相组合，着力表现港城宁波蓬勃发展，用于创新的城市新形象。
The design also followed the new concept of a modern museum, concentrating on a large public space and multi-functional services, which makes the museum an important cultural complex.
建筑设计上展现“现代博物馆”的新理念，强调流畅舒适大气的公共空间，实现功能多样的文化休闲教育服务，使得中国港口博物馆成为一个重要的综合文化体。
There are six parts to the museum exhibition:
博物馆展示内容分六个部分：
“Gateway to the World”-History of Chinese ports
第一部分：“港通天下”——中国港口历史陈列
This sector shows the development of Chinese ports in chronological order, namely, remote antiquity, ancient times, modern times and the contemporary age.
此陈列以历史时间顺序为主线，按照远古、古代、近代、现代四个历史阶段，展示我国港口的发展变化。
The exhibition mainly focuses on the important facts, typical figures, landmark events and major achievements, in order to unfold before people a full view of the development and the unique roles of Chinese ports in different ages.
这里主要展现各历史阶段中国港口发生的具有断代性、标志性、里程碑意义的重要史实、典型事件、重大成就。既反映各个历史时期全国港口的发展全貌，也反映特定历史时期重要港口的独特作用。
“Roads to Innovation”-Knowledge of Modern ports
第二部分：“创新之路”——现代港口知识陈列
This sector shows the technical characteristics and position of modern ports, its basic structure, major functions, infrastructure, equipment, key technology and support system.
此陈列以当代港口技术为背景，按照港口基本构成、主要功能、基础设施、重要设备、关键技术、支持系统，展示现代港口的技术特征和地位作用。
This professional exhibition is divided into such three parts: port construction, port operation and port support system.
以专业功能为主线，分为港口建设、港口作业、港口支持系统三个展区。
Science Exploration Center of ports
第三部分：港口科学探索馆
According to its subjects, the exploration center could be divided into several parts. For example, port science and technology, navigation and shipping, oceanography and safety on board. The items on display include loading and unloading, cargo test, wave experience, sea water desalination and salvage. It offers visitors a totally new experience through hi-tech, multimedia and digital methods.
以高科技多媒体数字和机电一体化为核心技术，此馆围绕港口科技、航海航运、海洋地理、海上安全等主题。设计包括港口装卸、货物检测、浪涌体检、海水淡化、水下打捞等相关展项展品。形成参观者对港口及海洋知识的全面体验。
Digital Ocean Center
第四部分：“数字海洋”体验馆
The center wants to provide visitors with different audio-visual effects and a virtual experience of the sea. Entering into the center, you will feel as if you were in the ocean. Through some virtual and special image, visitors can learn something related to ocean circulation, ocean resources development and oceans in the future.
此馆以“数字海洋”核心技术为基础，以人类了解海洋、利用海洋、未来海洋为主要内容，以全沉浸的视觉与听觉感受为主要形式，运用虚拟、特种影响等高新展示手段，使参观者走进展厅仿佛走进了海洋世界。
Under Water Archaeology
第五部分：“水下考古在中国”专题陈列
Including exhibition and on-site sunken ship repair, this sector shows the development and achievement of many aspects of underwater archaeology.
包括展厅和现场沉船修复，展示了中国水下考古发展状况。
These include technology and methods, surveys and protection of underwater cultural relics in China
水下考古技术方法、中国水下文物调查与水下考古发掘陈国、水下考古成果的保护与交流、水下考古前景展望等内容。
Besides the exhibition, there is an 800 square meters sunken ship repair center, which offers a close-up of ancient ship repair.
除了陈列展览本身，还在展厅内衣玻璃房的形式设置了近800平方米的出水古船修复中心，参观者可近距离体验科研人员进行古船修复过程。
History of Beilun
第六部分：“海濡之地”北仑史迹陈列
This section gives visitors the whole story of Beilun district where the museum is located through the display of important facts, key figures and landmark events
这里展示了各个历史阶段博物馆所在地宁波市北仑区发生的重要史实、典型事件和重要任务。
