Club Closing! 19th Party Congress: Consequences & Preview

What is the Congress all about? What to expect and how will it affect the everyday life in Beijing?

This coming Wednesday 18. October China’s top officials will gather in Beijing for the 19th national congress of the Communist Party of China. This congress takes place every 5 years and will lead to the re-election of President Xi.

How does it influence the everyday life?

All clubs will close down from the 15.10 - 26.10

You might have noticed more controls around Sanlitun and Tiananmen. Better to bring your passport with you in case you run into a random police check.

Also make sure you have your housing registration. They might be patrolling in your neighborhood. 

Of course don't mess up with the law especially during these days as drug tests might be part of the routine control during the congress.

The west street of the worker stadium (with most clubs) already closes between 9-11pm in order to check the passing by cars. So make sure your motorbikes don't have any fake plates.

But there is one thing we can expect:

"Congress Blue"! So let's hope we can at least enjoy some blue sky over Beijing.

What is it all about?

The official task of the 2,287 delegates selected to attend this year’s event is to ponder and approve new policies and elect the people who will lead China for the next five years.

Five of the seven spots on China’s top ruling council, the politburo standing committee, are open, as well as 11 of the wider politburo’s 25 seats and roughly half of the spots on the 205-member central committee.

An important task which usually should take place during this years congress is the presentation of China’s next top two leaders (Future President of China).  But so far no one is known; one man seen as a possible successor was recently toppled in a politically-charged corruption investigation.
