Background / General description
Established in 1996, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) leads and inspires the world to achieve its shared vision of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths. UNAIDS unites the efforts of 11 UN organisations—UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, UN Women, ILO, UNESCO, WHO and the World Bank—and works closely with global and national partners towards ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030 as part of the Sustainable Development Goals.
UNAIDS provides the strategic direction, advocacy, coordination and technical support to catalyse and connect leadership from governments, the private sector and communities to deliver life-saving HIV services.
UNAIDS has shaped public policy on HIV at the global, regional and national levels. It has mobilised investment for sound national policy using evidence, experience and political advocacy, built health and community systems, established legal frameworks and shaped public opinion towards creating healthy and resilient societies.
The UNAIDS China Office, also established in 1996, has made relentless efforts to introduce the best practices of the global HIV response to China, provide technical support for China’s health authorities, and help China to build capability on HIV epidemic monitoring, HIV prevention and control.
A multisectoral approach has been adopted to engage the government, the private sector, community-based organisations and the media to advocate the elimination of stigma and discrimination and build inclusive social environments inducive to HIV prevention and control. In 2014, UNAIDS China Office also started to place South-South Cooperation and China-Africa Health Collaboration high on its agenda. There are five main areas of work of UNAIDS China Office:

Advocate within the UN, the government and civil society partners to address gaps in the implementation of AIDS responses, informed by prevailing quality evidence;
