外国摄影师镜头中的成都模样 | Chengdu through Lenses of Foreigners

每一个来到成都的歪果仁,都有他们心中的“成都印象”。他们中有的会以文字书写这座城市的安逸生活,而有的则选择以镜头记录下成都的动人瞬间。


Each foreigner that comes to Chengdu has his or her own "Chengdu impression". Among this group, some prefer to use their pens or keyboards to write about the life of comfort in this city, while others choose to rely on their lenses to capture and illustrate those touching Chengdu moments.


小布就寻到这样几位外国人,他们将成都的色彩、人群、生活方式悉数定格,以照片的形式保存了下来。这一期,就跟着小布一起去看看成都在他们的镜头中是什么模样吧~


I found several foreigners in the second category. The colors, characters and lifestyle of Chengdu have been taken and saved in their photos. Come with me and see Chengdu from the perspective of camera lenses in the hands of our foreign friends.


Beluha Vyacheslav:这就是人民公园

Beluha Vyacheslav: This is People's Park


“我是贝鲁哈·维亚切斯拉夫。在国外生活的头几年,我爱上了摄影。吸引我眼球的每样东西我都会拍,我把我的相机当成机枪用。不久以后,我开始关注更有意义的重要课题,并开始以相机为工具来帮助自己进行艺术创作。”


"My name is Beluha Vyacheslav. My passion for photography developed during my first years of living abroad. After initially shooting absolutely everything which attracted my eye and using my camera as machine gun, I have switched to more significant vital topics and started treating my camera as a tool helping to create art.

在成都,除了人民公园,还没有其他地方比它更能显示出令人惊叹的文化多样性。因此,无论你是第一天到访成都还是在这里生活了一段时间,人民公园总是能为勇于探索的人带来惊喜。从喝到令人印象深刻的各种川茶的茶馆,到中国各民族的现场民间表演,寻找刺激的人还可以尝试一下掏耳朵——挑选一位街头技师,让他们拿着骇人的工具在耳边游弋。事实上,即便是本地人,也不是每个人都敢于尝试一下的。而那些尝试过的人却把这一过程描述成一种十足的享受,他们认为掏耳朵是有益于听力的。


It would be unlikely that there is any other place in Chengdu with such astonishing cultural diversity as People's Park. Therefore regardless of whether it is your first day in Chengdu or you have settled there a while ago, People's Park will always have something to surprise explorers - from tea houses serving an impressive selection of Sichuan tea, to live folk performances of Chinese ethnic groups, to the dozens of street "doctors" offering ear-cleaning services with their ominous-looking tools. Of the latter not even every local is brave enough to try one, however the ones who have describe it as pleasant enough. It is also believed that ear-cleaning is beneficial for hearing.

想要进一步享受轻松氛围的游客还可以租一条船,在游动着肥硕鲤鱼的池塘里泛舟,看老年人挥舞他们一米长的毛笔在岸边练习书法。在这里,无惧腹中空空如也,因为人们有大把机会品尝各种本地小吃。


Visitors looking for a more relaxed environment may rent boats on the lakes where goldfish abound, or watch elders practicing their calligraphy skills with meter-long painting brushes. Hungry ones will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy local snacks.

人民公园被称为探究成都本土文化的最佳地点。毫无疑问,周末是来这里游览一番的最佳时间,当然不要忘记带上你的相机。


People's Park may be described as the best place for exploration of the local culture of Chengdu. Obviously the best time for visiting is on weekends. And don't forget to bring your camera.


Dan Sandoval:成都式“散打”

Dan Sandoval: Chengdu's Freestyle


Dan Sandoval 是一位在世界著名学府——布鲁克斯摄影学院接受过专业训练的摄影师。在校期间,他学习了成为一名成功商业摄影师的必备技能。自2008年起,这位来自美国洛杉矶的摄影师便生活在中国,并且游历了大半个中国。


Dan Sandoval is a professionally trained photographer from the world famous Brooks Institute of Photography, where he was taught the necessary skills to become a successful commercial photographer. Originally from Los Angeles, he has been living in China since 2008 and has travelled extensively throughout the country.

Dan Sandoval:都说成都是休闲之都,是慢生活,让人愿意远道而来,以一只蜗牛的方式慢吞吞地走走停停,在街巷看人看风景,去茶馆听听麻将听二胡,在各种活动中偶遇潮男靓女…… 连过个马路都有可能遇上一种生活态度。成都人把这种自由散漫的生活方式称之为“散打”。这“散打”可不是功夫界的“散打”,虽然同样都有点儿离经叛道,都杂糅着各门各派的功夫,但成都的散是骨子里的散,本性自在随意,又任性地长出了坚韧的刺。不管成都如何越来越国际化、现代化,成都人的“散打”方式,保留甚至说是保护着老成都的生活气息。


Dan Sandoval: Chengdu is the capital of leisure and laid-back lifestyle. Visitors from afarstroll on the streets of Chengdu as slowly as snails. They come to observe the locals and their lives in the alleys, listening to the sound of Mahjong shuffle and the music from the strings of Erhu, and discovering stylish boys and girls. The lifestyle is in the detail. The free and easy way of life is referred to as "freestyle combat" by Chengduers, however, not to be confused with martial art, though both boast similarities in the rebellious nature. Nevertheless, the freestyle of Chengduers is a bred-in-the-bone attitude, carefree but perseverant. No matter how international or modern Chengdu becomes, this freestyle remains and even safeguards the essences of life in old Chengdu. 


Dalmiro Quiroga:诗意黑白灰

Dalmiro Quiroga: the Poetic Black, White and Gray


Dalmiro Quiroga:音乐人,摄影师。出生于阿根廷,20岁移居美国,四个月前开始旅居成都的生活。他与《洛杉矶时报》《赫芬顿邮报》、德国艺术出版社Taschen保持深度合作,作品曾在布宜诺斯艾利斯、纽约和伦敦等地展出。


Dalmiro Quiroga, a musician and photographer, was born in Argentina. He settled down in America in his twenty and came to Chengdu four months ago. He cooperated deeply with Los Angeles Times, The Huffington Post and Taschen. His works have been exhibited in Buenos Aires, New York, and London.

“我喜欢成都的阴天,那是最好的柔光箱,整座城市都变成一个广阔而活跃的摄影棚。”


"I like cloudy days in Chengdu, which is the best softbox. At that time, the whole city could be turned into a wide and active shooting studio."


“很难定义美的内涵,但我更喜欢真实的表达。”因此,Dalmiro将“Less is More”的时尚法则同样运用到拍摄上。他在洛杉矶和成都都拍过婚纱照,用的也是自然光无后期的标配,邀约的客户也是满心喜欢,他相信自然真实的风格也会有越来越大的市场需求。因为真实,并不意味着乏味,它可以让创作者收敛起对后期的依赖,考验创作者在细微处的洞察力和创造力。


"It is hard to define what beauty could be, but I prefer actual expression." So Dalmiro adopts the rule "Less is More" on shooting. He took wedding photos in both Los Angeles and Chengdu under natural light without post production, which won people's favor. What he believes is that the authentic and natural style could gain increasing welcome, since authenticity, not vapidity, could reduce the creator's dependence on post-production and be a challenge for the insight and creativity on details.

Dalmiro的作品融入了纪实和新闻摄影,属于艺术摄影风格。他画面中黑白的强烈对比并不多,大面积的浅灰是最明亮的色彩,黑白灰以某种有规律的明暗和谐分布,照片的感染力蕴藏在被拍物本身。Dalmiro的照片,不是一眼震撼的张力,而是娓娓道来的低语。


The works of Dalmiro incorporate documentary photography and photojournalism, belonging to artistic photography. In his images, there is not so much strong contrast of black and white, but a large area of light gray. The black, white and gray are distributed harmoniously under perfect light and shade, and the real power is contained in the subjects being photographed. Watching Dalmiro's photos, there's not an instant astonishing sense but a slow whispering of storytelling.


Michal Pachniewski:关于熟悉的陌生冒险

Michal Pachniewski: Freelance Adventure in Familiar Environments


Michal Pachniewski, 波兰人,35岁。2006年带着返程票首次来蓉,却发现6个月的时间完全不足以了解一座城市、其文化以及在此生活的人。他留了下来,语言培训学校的全职工作为他提供了经济保障,让他有足够的尝试和思考空间,延续着诞生于高中时代的摄影热情。


Michal Pachniewski, aged 35, is a photographer from Poland. In 2006, he came to Chengdu with a return ticket, only to find a 6-month period far from enough to learn about this city, its culture and people living here. Therefore, he stayed and found a full-time job in a language training school. With stable economic support, he thus could afford to think and try new things while continuing to pursue photography - a passion developed early in his high-school days.

成都一个小型摄影师群展曾展出过Michal的人像作品,细节里满是情绪:幽蓝的冷色调中,汗水刚刚划过锁骨,闪着微寒的光。这些年来,Michal的摄影主题和风格发生着明显变化,从肖像到街头摄影,画面越发冷静克制,摄影语境变得多元、饱满。他像个敏感又孤僻的艺术家,小心寻找着城市中人与人、人与物、物与影之间的微小关联。


Michal's portrait photographs were displayed in a small photographers' group exhibition in Chengdu. The details he captured were filled with strong emotions: backgrounded with a cold blue tone, the sweat just flew down someone's clavicle, glistening with a gleam of chill. All through these years, there are obvious changes both in his photography theme and style. While shifting his interest from portrait to street photography, the frame he captured was getting calmer, and his photographic context was becoming more and more diversified and vigorous. He is just like a sensitive and solitary artist, carefully looking for the possible tiny correlation between people, objects, and shadows.

他通过对色彩、构图和细节关联性的构建,打破对熟悉环境的常规感知,这样的陌生表达像是一场冒险。


By creatively bringing relevance to colors, composition and coherence, he is always able to think outside the box and break away from the conventional perception of the familiar environments. Such unfamiliar expression is very much like an exciting adventure.

Michal摄影作品的一张典型:明亮的黄、红、黑,“禁停”指示牌与竿子,再普通不过。他解说道:“这个指示牌的黄色边缘刚好隐入黄色墙面,不看影子,你或许都不会察觉指示牌是真的坏掉一个边,竿子上黑黄色块交接处形成有趣的几何连接。”要读懂Michal的作品,需要一点儿耐心和思考力,寻找他在细节处留下的有趣线索。


A typical photographic work of Michal is like this: a "No Parking" sign and a pole in yellow, red and black, which cannot be more ordinary. According to him, the yellow edge of this sign happens to perfectly integrate into the yellow wall behind it. Only by checking its shadow can you notice the fact that part of the sign edge is missing; also, there are a couple of geometric patterns at the joint of black and yellow lumps on the pole. To understand Michal's works, you need to be patient and critical, and dig more for the interesting clues he left in the details. 


在成都生活的这些年,他看到日新月异的变化,现代与传统在交融。作为隐隐保持着距离感的街头记录者,他说:“我喜欢繁华地段,但没有必要刻意追逐现代化的街景,我喜欢一种‘传统中国的意境’,这在玉林和川大附近依然可见。”


During the years of living in Chengdu, he has witnessed constant changes and the gradual fusion of modernity with tradition. As a "recorder of streets", he somehow feels like keeping certain distance from the world he's about to capture. He said, "I like all the hustle and bustle of urban life. However, at the same time, I don't deliberately look for the modern aspects of the city. I do prefer the balance between the action and 'old China' - an atmosphere which can still be found in areas around Yulin or Sichuan University for instance."
