阿贝乐：在成都触摸中医 | Abel: Exposed to TCM in Chengdu

2018年全国大众创业万众创新活动周刚刚过去，在“双创周”上，除了高新技术产业外，也有许多企业将传统产业将技术与“双创”结合，为传统产业增添活力，其中就有中医药产业。

The 2018 National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Week has just come to a close, and other than hi-tech industries, a raft of traditional industries also combined their technologies with entrepreneurial and innovative elements, injecting new vitality into their development. One of these beneficiaries is the traditional Chinese medicine industry.

不过，中医药产业的发展不光体现在“双创周”，也体现在“走出去”，伟大的中医学宝库不仅吸引中国人的目光，也勾起许多外国友人的兴趣。今天，发布君就要介绍一位来自法国的“洋中医”——阿贝乐。

However, advancement in the traditional Chinese medicine industry is not only manifested during the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Week, but also in its "go abroad" efforts. The treasure and heritage of TCM has garnered the attention of many Chinese and captured the interest of foreigners, too. Today, I am going to introduce a "foreign traditional Chinese doctor" from France - Abel Glaser.

冲着中医来成都

Coming to Chengdu for TCM

成都每年都会迎来学习中医的各国年轻人。阿贝乐说：他们有的可能喜欢武术太极，可能因为李小龙对中国文化有了兴趣。这样的兴趣使他们层层摸索、最终接触到中医。“我接触中医前对中国知之甚少。”他抬起两掌平行指向前，在空气中比划出一条通道，“我就是冲着中医来的，随后才慢慢了解中国文化。”

Every year, Chengdu welcomes youngsters of the world who come to study traditional Chinese medicine (hereinafter referred to as "TCM"). Abel Glaser said that some of these youngsters become interested in Chinese culture because of martial arts, and they may be fond of Bruce Lee and Tai Chi. Such interest drives further exploration that eventually exposes them to TCM. "I was ill-informed about China before I got to know TCM." Raising his arms to the front, he pointed out a passage in the air, and said, "I came to China for TCM, and then, I gradually exposed myself to the Chinese culture."

阿贝乐尤其喜爱阅读中文中医古籍。《伤寒论》里那些汉字在述说什么？《黄帝内经》里条条经络如何勾勒出完整的人体秘密？为何身体的这处有病痛，却要医那里？“我就慢慢去寻找这个道理。”

Abel is especially fond of reading ancient books of TCM. What do characters in Treatise on Febrile Diseases suggest? How do meridians described in The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine outline such an integrated human anatomy? Why do doctors treat other areas when this one aches? "From then on, I stepped on the path to trace the truth."

阿贝乐的家乡位于法国西南图卢兹市。生活在乡村的阿贝乐自在成长。他小时候喜欢画画、想当美术老师，高中分科时却选了理科“科学”方向。大学里他学西医专业，却在读了一年之后便退学，去当地一间私立学校学了中医。这一打算，既非体验别样生活，也非重拾他的童年梦想。阿贝乐是认真的。

Abel's hometown is Toulouse, a city located in southwest France. The rural environment provided Abel with a carefree childhood. As a child, he liked painting, and wanted to be an art teacher. However, during high school, he chose to major in "science" when he had to decide on the different tracks of study. In university, he majored in Western medicine, but dropped out after one year of study. This was not a gap year, nor was the year to fulfill his childhood dreams. What happened was that he studied TCM in a local private school.

儿子要学中医，爸爸理解不了这样的决定，三个弟弟也感到奇怪，只有妈妈成了家中最能接受的人。因为最初，是妈妈带他接触到了中医。“14岁时我得了中耳炎，妈妈带我去看了一名针灸师。”

Confronted with Abel's decision, his families gave different responses: His father couldn't understand his choice, his brothers felt it very strange, while his mother was the only one who encouraged this. At first, it was his mother took him to get to know TCM. "When I was 14, I got otitis media, so my mother took me to an acupuncturist."

阿贝乐耳朵发炎难受，医生治疗“效果不好”，而那名针灸师，“那么小、那么细的针放在身体上就可以解决痛苦。”事隔多年，阿贝乐坐在成都奎星楼街的咖啡馆里，提到第一次接触中医，他急急抿了一口咖啡放下说：“我太好奇了。”

Abel felt extreme pain because of the inflamed ears, and doctors couldn't give him an "effective treatment". On the contrary, this acupuncturist alleviated his pain "by giving a treatment with such small, thin needles". Years later, sitting in the café on Kuixinglou Street, Chengdu, he hurriedly sipped his coffee and said, "I was so curious" when mentioning his first contact with TCM.

家在乡村，阿贝乐对植物草药并不陌生，但千奇百怪的中药，法国的中医学校怎么教？阿贝乐说，在这间法国老师开的中医学校里，他从基础开始，学阴阳理论、五行理论、经络穴位。“大二、大三开始学中药、方剂。”关于中药，他解释：“每个中药单独学，最后，就学怎么把它们配合在一起。”

Due to his childhood environment in a rural area, Abel was familiar with herbs. How could a French school of TCM teach the diversity of Chinese herbs? Abel noted that in the school of TCM established by French teachers, he started from foundations of Yin-Yang theory, Five Elements theory and meridian and acupoint. "When I was a sophomore, I began to learn Chinese herbs and prescription." As for Chinese herbs, he explained, "I learnt those herbs separately, and eventually, I learned to approach and coordinate them."

“学校里使用法语的中医教材。”阿贝乐却越学越不满足。关于中医的一切，在原版古籍里是如何描述的？这一时期，用中文看中医经典成了最令他好奇的事。2007年，阿贝乐带着打工赚的钱来到中国学中文，落脚成都。

"My school adopted teaching materials of TCM in French." During his study, Abel felt increasingly eager to learn TCM. How many more secrets of TCM can be unveiled in the original texts? During this period, he was most curious about how to use Chinese to understand the classics of TCM. In 2007, Abel came to China to learn Chinese with money earned through a part-time job. Finally, he settled in Chengdu.

边学中文边找老师学《医古文》，在同学家里开的诊所实习，与中医大学的朋友一起考研究生、一边打工一边赚学费……谈起从前的经历，阿贝乐只觉已恍如隔世。如今的阿贝乐，已在成都中医药大学读了硕士与博士。或许因为大量阅读的原因，他不仅说起中文很流畅，表达和词汇也很丰富。由于长时间在成都生活，他还能不自觉地在普通话里穿插上一句完整的四川话。

In those years, he found teachers to teach him Ancient Medical Chinese while learning Chinese. During his internship in a clinic established by the family of his schoolmate, he prepared for the postgraduate qualifying examination with his friends in university of TCM. The experience of earning enough tuition through a part-time job felt as if generations had passed. Nowadays, Abel is a graduated doctor of Chengdu University of TCM. Attributing to his wide reading, he speaks very fluent Chinese with abundant vocabulary. Due to having lived in Chengdu for a long time, he also unconsciously inserts Sichuan dialect into his mandarin.

经典传递

The Inheritance of Classics

由于阿贝乐是从针灸开始认识中医的，这令他在专业中更以经络、穴位见长。《黄帝内经》无疑是他的最爱。“硕士时，我学的是基础理论‘黄帝内经’专业，针灸经络的基础理论都在这本书里。”他说：“学这个专业也是一个好机会，我希望学到中医经典的知识。”

Because Abel exposed himself to TCM through acupuncture, he is adept at meridian and acupoint. The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine (Huangdi Neijing) is definitely his favorite classic. "I majored in 'Huangdi Neijing' of Basic Theory when pursuing a master's degree. All the basic theories are included in this book." He said, "It was a good opportunity to take this as my major. I hoped to learn the classical knowledge of TCM."

“博士我学的是‘各家学说’，就是很多医生的其他著作，《千金要方》《脾胃论》《伤寒论》……我觉得（学）这个可以看出中医历史的发展。” 

"I studied 'Theories of Schools' during my doctoral study, which means that I studied other publications of many doctors, such as Thousand Golden Preions, Treatise on Spleen and Stomach and Treatise on Febrile Diseases. From my perspective, learning these classics grants me perspectives into the historical development of TCM."

在成都十年，阿贝乐早已达成跳出母语用中文看中医经典的目标。研究生二年级时，他更开始翻译中医古籍，先将书本上的汉字一一消化、整理，再融回自己的母语中。

After 10 years in Chengdu, Abel has realized the goal of using Chinese instead of French to understand classics of TCM. When he was a sophomore in graduate school, he began to translate the classical texts of TCM. He studied and understood Chinese on books, then translated them into his native language.

回看2000年在法国中医学校的所学，阿贝乐笑着说：“我现在觉得那些都太不够了。刚开始我是为了自己的学习翻译了一些资料。后来，我就给日内瓦一所中医学院做翻译，在欧洲出版。”

Reviewing what he had learned in his French TCM school in 2000, Abel laughed and said, "Now, I feel that it was so inadequate for learning the discipline." "In the beginning, I translated some materials for my learning. Afterwards, I translated for a Genevan school of TCM. The works were published in Europe."

目前，阿贝乐已经翻译了《伤寒论》《医理真传》。他展示这两本书，红蓝封皮上竖排着中文书名，下方写着拼音与法语。目前，《四圣心源》、《神农本草经》的翻译也已做完。

So far, Abel has translated Treatise on Febrile Diseases and True Principles of Medical Science. The Chinese titles of the two books are vertically arranged on their covers, below which Pinyin and French are written. Currently, the translations of Four Sacred Heart and Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica have been completed. 

一本书翻译为法文，体量可能是原文的3倍。“《神农本草经》最让我耗神，因为这本典籍几经流传，我要从中挑选最为合适的版本。”在翻译之外，他也为欧洲的学校提供书籍翻译的挑选建议：“我会说‘这本书很好，但那本你们看了会更爽！’”。

A translated piece in French may have 3 times as many words than those of the original text. "The most energy-consuming book was Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica. This classic has been spred many times, making it hard for me to select the most appropriate version." In addition to translating, Abel also provides advice in selecting translated books for schools in Europe, "I would say that this is a brilliant book, but the other one will be much inspiring to read!"

阿贝乐说，欧洲有少量法文版中医典籍，有的还并不是由真正学中医的人翻译的。“很多人不了解，但想学习、想了解。”他认为经典是珍贵的、最值得看的，“这样也可以给他们提供经典当教材，提高‘那边’的水平。”

Abel said that there are some classical TCM texts in French in Europe, among which, some have not been translated by TCM majors. "Many people want to learn TCM even though they know little about it." In his opinion, the classics are invaluable and worthy of reading. "Translated works can provide them with some of the classics as teaching materials to improve their level."

融入传统

Integration into Tradition

“我爸爸最开始不理解我为何学中医，他觉得我学西医是可以学出来的。后来，我治疗过他的椎间盘痛，他就渐渐接受了。”阿贝乐发觉，与自己刚接触中医的时期相比，如今在法国和瑞士已经有越来越多的人愿意了解中医。

"My dad did not understand why I chose to learn TCM at the beginning. He thought that studying Western medicine was more promising. He gradually grew to accept my choice after I treated his intervertebral disc." Abel found that compared to the time when he learned TCM, more people in France and Switzerland are willing to learn TCM now.

阿贝乐说：“我在中国十多年，天天看关于中医的书、中医的经典。这其中包含的中国文化，我已经慢慢融合在这里面了。”

Abel said, "During 10 years of living in China, I have read books and classics on TCM every day, in which Chinese culture is embraced. And I have gradually integrated into them."

融入之后，他也开始尝试着向更多人解释他所学的中医知识：“我帮他们解释思路，让他们明白为什么从很小的、简单的地方，例如，吃饭、休息、劳动，在这些方面做些小调整，就能影响整个生命。”

After integration, he attempts to give explanations of TCM,” I explain the thinking delivered in this book to them, helping them understand the reasons that start from such small and simple matters as eating, resting and laboring. Making adjustments to such habits will influence the whole of life."

“长期的效果，需要照顾身体、心理、灵性。”阿贝乐说，“越研究它，越与它的精髓接触，自己就越发感觉到舒服。”

"Long-term effects require caring for the body, mind and spirit." Abel said, "If you are probing into TCM and touch its quintessence, you will feel at ease."
