Over the past five years, Rachel has been running this small shop near Gaoshengqiao which sells handicrafts made by impoverished households, people with disabilities, and families with diseases from remote areas. Behind each item in the store lies a special story of its owner.

Mr. Yu Xianrong lived in Wenjiang District of Chengdu with his family, who has two sons with Thalassemia and a daughter with Down syndrome. He makes his living from making leather belts, bags and other leather goods all the year round, and most of his income goes to hospital for treatment of his children's disease. According to Racheal, "Blue Sheep" has helped raise funds for Yu Xianrong's family to receive medical treatment by selling his leather products, organizing flea markets and operating cafes, etc. An introduction card in the shop reads, "If you buy this tooled leather product, you will help this brave family fighting for life and give them a greater chance of better living."

Most of the embroideries in Rachel's shop came from a training program called "Originality Embroidery Club", which is a manual skills training program dedicated to people with hearing impairments. Through the DIY workshop training, the organizers hope to teach young men with impaired hearing basic carpentry skills, and teach women simple stitching and sewing skills.

At present, products of more than 700 craftsmen from 40 organizations and of 9 ethnic group are sold here, and more than 3,000 people has benefited from the "Blue Sheep". It is Racheal's ultimate goal to help people in need to live a better life and gain more confidence in themselves.

Born in the south of England, Rachel has developed a strong interest in adventure stories and exotic cultures since childhood. After graduating from medical school, she made up her mind to serve people in remote and poverty-stricken areas. "When I learned that it took 30 days for patients to be transported to hospital in Nepal, and there was roughly one doctor per thousand people in Nigeria, I decided to devote my life to helping those who were less fortunate", said Rachel.

Over the past 40 years, Rachel has given up her high-paid and stable job as a doctor and travelled to 15 countries, including Nepal, Bhutan, India and Mongolia, and dedicated to the development of the healthcare, education and industries in developing countries as well as remote and backward areas.

Rachel first came to China in 1989, during which time she was volunteering in Zedang Town of Tibet for seven years, and trained a total of 250 village doctors in cooperation with the local government. Living among the Tibetan families, she noticed that many local craftsmen created exquisite stuff, but have nowhere to sell them. In the 2013, Rachel put aside all other charity work, came to Chengdu all by herself and set up the "Blue Sheep" store.

Seventy-three-year-old Rachel, who lives in Zhonghe Town, rides an electric motorbike for an hour every day to her store at Gaoshengqiao. She has long been familiar with the city, and met a lot of friends in Chengdu. Both the city and people living here attract her deeply. "I hope my shop can have better business, so that more people can benefit from it and have better confidence and greater hope in life", Rachel said.

In September this year, Rachel was nominated for the "Inspiring Women Award" at the 2018 British Business Awards, sponsored by the British Chamber of Commerce in China. What she values is not the award itself but the promoted reputation and popularity of the store in China so as to spread the spirit of "Blue Sheep" to help others.

Happy to see that her store is expanding and breaking even, Rachel believes that everything is developing in a positive way. "I may not be able to change the world, but I can change the world for one person", she said calmly and firmly.

When we came for the interview, we happened to meet the busy assistant Mr. Huang Zhichun, a 34-year-old Chengdu local, who was diagnosed with viral encephalitis a few years ago and suffered from after-disease epilepsy. Because of the disease, he became very negative and unable to leave the house by himself. Once Huang read about Grandma Racheal 's report and was deeply inspired: "Grandma Rachel is trying to help others at this old age, and I shouldn't give up so early when I am still young." Huang Zhichun came to "Blue Sheep" to be a volunteer and devoted himself to public good. The kindness and compassion of Rachel have rekindled Huang's hope of life and encouraged him to help people in need.

"Age and location are not a problem. As long as you are kind and positive, you will live carefreely wherever you are." Rachel said Chengdu is a beautiful and heartwarming place and she would love to settle in Chengdu. People here are very friendly, open-minded and enthusiastic. The city is also well-constructed, especially the increasing greenways in the past few years, very much like in the UK, very healthy and ecologic. Rachel firmly believes that in such a place of outstanding environment and brilliant people, the spirit of helping others will be widespread in no time.
