Paragraph 4: Theparticular symbolic significance of the cave paintings in southwestern Franceis more explicitly revealed, perhaps, by the results of a study conducted byresearchers Patricia Rice and Ann Paterson. The data they present suggest thatthe animals portrayed in the cave paintings were mostly the ones that thepainters preferred for meat and for materials such as hides. For example, wildcattle (bovines) and horses are portrayed more often than we would expect bychance, probably because they were larger and heavier (meatier) than otheranimals in the environment. In addition, the paintings mostly portray animalsthat the painters may have feared the most because of their size, speed, natural weapons such as tusks and horns, and the unpredictability of theirbehavior. That is, mammoths, bovines, and horses are portrayed more often thandeer and reindeer. Thus, the paintings are consistent with the idea that theart is related to the importance of hunting in the economy of Upper Paleolithicpeople. Consistent with this idea, according to the investigators, is the factthat the art of the cultural period that followed the Upper Paleolithic alsoseems to reflect how people got their food. But in that period, when gettingfood no longer depended on hunting large game animals (because they werebecoming extinct), the art ceased to focus on portrayals of animals.

According toparagraph 4, what change is evident in the art of the period following the UpperPaleolithic?○This new art starts to depict small animals rather than large ones.○This new art ceases to reflect the ways in which people obtainedtheir food. ○This new art no longer consists mostly ofrepresentations of animals. ○This new art begins toshow the importance of hunting to the economy.

Consistent with this idea, according tothe investigators, is the fact that the art of the cultural period thatfollowed the Upper Paleolithic also seems to reflect howpeople got their food.

But in that period, when gettingfood no longer depended on hunting large game animals (because they werebecoming extinct), the art ceased to focus on portrayals of animals.

具体的变化也就应该是倒数第1句的主干信息the art ceased to focus onportrayals of animals,这才是我们要找的最核心的答案。

同时 portrayals of animals换成了 representations ofanimals。
