I have known Wang Yigang from 1993 when we held a couple of solos shows for him in Ritan Park and at the China World Hotel. The riot of colour and the strength of his stroke connected with me from the beginning. We had drifted apart, but I always took pleasure is seeing where his shows were being held and who he was working with, and knowing how dedicated he is to his abstract painting. And then in 2019 he was in a show at SOKA opposite our 798 gallery, and before we knew it he was included in Opposites Attract along with Liu Qinghe at Red Gate again!

I have always remembered him as quiet and humble – and cannot imagine him kicking anybody’s door open!

As to his ‘pornographic’ painting – I have the photographs!

我从 1993 年就与王易罡相识，当时我们在日坛公园和中国大饭店为他举办了几场个展。最初打动我的是躁动的色彩和他强有力的笔触。虽然我们已经漂流四方，但我总是乐见于他的展览在哪里举行，他和谁一起工作，并且知道他对他的画作有多投入。在 2019 年他在我们 798 画廊对面的 SOKA 参加了一次展览，就在我们知晓此事之前，他与刘庆和的再次亮相于红门画廊的“相对引力”展览。

我一直记得他安静而谦逊的样子——无法想象他会踢任何人的门！

至于他的“色情”画作——我这里有照片！

红门画廊三十年的记忆

1993年经范迪安先生介绍认识了布朗先生，布朗先生看了我的作品后，就確定1994年的9、10月份給我作一個個展。當時的畫廊還是在北京日坛公园。开幕的前一天下午我来到日坛公園內的紅門畫廊，看見布朗跪在在地上，拿著一個黑色的水性筆，在添堵由於運輸過程中畫框脫落的顏色，頓時一種職業的敬意油然而生。這種精益求精、親力親為的一個外國人，不就是又一個白求恩嗎？開幕的當天來許多朋友，范迪安、易英、殷雙喜、李劍光、何冰、還有一些個各國家的外交官及夫人等。

1995年的展览就在中国大饭店二层的过道里面了，布展之后我从沈阳赶到北京，我问布朗布展的效果怎么样？布朗耸耸肩膀说：“都没有了” 我说：“什么意思？”布朗说：“都买了！”我说：“怎么可能？你别开玩笑了！”布朗说；“因为你的作品里有色情的原因，中国大饭店的一个总监看了之后不让展，所以目前全部撤下来了，正在与他们协调当中。” 我当时就懵逼了！这他妈的也太荒诞了！后来经过协商展览分为二个部分，有色情的一布分放在一个小房间里，仅共内部观模，没有色情的正常放在走廊里展。开幕的时候见到了西克与他的夫人，当时他好像还是外交官。

1996年经布朗推荐我的装置作品“中国规则”参加德国汉堡国际视觉艺术周！于是我便有了一趟欧洲之行，在展览期间结识了艺术家吴山专夫妇及禅凡，当时在德国布展工作是有补贴的，每天45马克，但是展览方也没通知我有，吴山专一问我才知道有这个钱。我说这个钱必须得要回来！老吴说：“你去一脚把门赐开，然后装做很愤怒的样子瞎说点啥都行，然后我给你翻译成德文。”我说：“ 好！”然后我一脚把门踢开，表情愤怒的瞎说了一通中文！老吴用德语与他们说：“王先生很愤怒，觉得你们岐视中国艺术家，王先生觉得受到了不公平待遇，为什么别的国家艺术家都有工作补贴而王先生没有？”这下子主办方就荒了！赶紧向我道歉，并表示立即解决，并问我还有什么别的要求没有？我说：“我要去荷兰与巴黎，希望你们能为我提供医疗保险费！”结果真的如其所愿……。

红门画廊在中国一晃三十年了！我想决不仅仅是我一个人，在众多青年艺术家成长的路上，布朗給与了我们极大的支持与鼓励！几乎是与我们一起成长，同时布朗又是中国当代艺术发展史的有力见证者！在红门三十周年之际；回忆都是美好难忘，祝愿红门！祝愿布朗……。

In 1993, I was introduced to Mr. Brian Wallace by Mr. Fan Dian. Brian arranged a personal exhibition for me without any hesitation after he saw my works. It was the “Ritan Park era” of the gallery. I came to the gallery in the afternoon before the opening in Ritan Park and found out that Brian was on his knees, re-coloring the side part of the frame with a black marker. A huge sense of honor hit me. Isn't a foreigner who keeps improving and does things by himself another Bethune? Many came to the opening: Fan Dian, Yi Ying, Yin Shuangxi, Li Jianguang, He Bing and some ambassador couples. 

The 1995 exhibition is in the corridor on the second floor of China World Hotel. I left Shenyang for Beijing after it was ready. I wondered how it was, but Brian told me that they were not there. “What do you mean”? I asked. “All sold out”, he said. “No way! You must be kidding!”, I doubted. “As your works are kind of erotic, it was halted by a director of the hotel. All the artworks are recalled and the negotiation is still in process”, he said. What? Fxxking absurd! After consultation, the exhibition was divided into two parts. The pornographic piece was placed in a small room, only for internal, and the non-pornographic piece was displayed normally in the corridor. At the opening, I saw Mr. Sigg and his wife, who seemed to be a diplomat at the time. 

In 1996, Brian recommended my installation "Rules of China" to participate in the International Visual Art Week in Hamburg, Germany! So I had a trip to Europe. During the exhibition, I met the artists Wu Shanzhuan with his wife and Chan Fan. At that time, there was a subsidy for work in Germany, 45 Marks a day, but the exhibition party did not notify me of it. Wu Shanzhuan ask me to know that I have this money. I said this money must be given! Wu said, "Go and open the door with a kick, and then pretend to be angry and say something nonsense. Then I will translate it into German for you." I said, "Okay!" Then I kicked the door open, talking nonsense in Chinese with an angry expression! Wu said  in German: "Mr. Wang is very angry and feels that you discriminate against Chinese artists. Mr. Wang feels that he has been treated unfairly. I said: "I'm going to Holland and Paris, I hope you can provide me with medical insurance premiums!" The result is really as expected. 

Red Gate Gallery has been in China for 30 years! I think it’s definitely not just me. Brian has given us great support and encouragement on the growth of many young artists! Almost grow up with us, and at the same time Brian is a powerful witness to the history of Chinese contemporary art development!

王易罡

教师、艺术家

王易罡（原名王毅刚），黑龙江齐齐哈尔人。1961年11月出生于黑龙江省齐齐哈尔市。中国美术家协会会员。1986年毕业于鲁迅美术学院油画系获学士学位，早年曾在沈阳大学师范学院美术系任教。1993年任沈阳大学师范学院美术系副教授。1997年调入鲁迅美术学院成人教育学院任副教授。1999-2003年兼任沈阳东宇美术馆馆长。2010年任鲁迅美术学院大连校区基础部主任、大连校区美术馆馆长。2013—至今任鲁迅美术学院沈阳校区美术馆馆长，教授、研究生导师，中国艺术研究院创作中心特聘研究员，中国美术家协会策展艺术委员会委员，北京中国写意研究院第一届常务理事。
