From series Metamorphsis,Zero Year, 40x80cm, Oil on Canvas, 2022

From series Metamorphsis,The Brain Crawling out to the Cliff, Gouache on Paper, 28x38cm, 2022

From series Deep into the Undress, No.1, Watercolor on Paper, 28x38cm, 2022

· Artist Statement ·

My early practice focused on drawing keyframes, backgrounds and various animal or human figures for photographic and video works. Later, I shifted towards using oil painting and watercolor to present the colors and fluidity in the images. My experience in composing and selecting colors for film photography during the early stages of my practice continues to provide me with inspiration for painting and drawing. Additionally, based on my research on still and moving images in film, I continued the idea of drawing storyboards for video works in the second series of works "Deep into the Undress", and explored the process of changes in biological forms over time through linear creative approach.
Text/Jingyi Wang

· Preface ·

“…, we can establish the moment when all the universe’s matter was concentrated in a single point, before it began to expand in space.

… ‘where else could we have been? Nobody knew then that there could be space’…”

———“All at One Point” from “The Complete Cosmicomics” Italo Calvino

From series Metamorphsis,Becoming the Ghost with Tender Pace, 80x100cm, Oil on Canvas, 2022

The exhibition "All at One Point" explores and depicts the frozen moments of life being created from chaos to order. The first series of works "Metamorphosis" starts from a broad perspective, showing non-human, animalistic, or human-beast hybrid creatures that might have inhabited in the pre-creation world,  and freezes their forms at the moment of suspension in zero gravity. The second series of works "Deep into the Undress” uses the uterus as a metaphor for the universe, exploring the mysterious state of the fetus surrounded by amniotic fluid and the symbiotic yet separable relationship between mother and child.

From series Metamorphsis,Blue Suspending Creature,  Gouache on Paper, 19x28cm, 2022

The imagery in the exhibition was inspired by Ovid's mythological story "Metamorphoses," which depicts human-beings transforming into animals, plants, stars, or stones for various reasons. By portraying non-human monsters rather than human subjects, the works in the exhibition hope to draw attention to the limits of our own perspectives and the possibility of other forms of consciousness. And also stimulate viewers to imagine and contemplate the nature of life's birth, creation, and the universe's most primitive state.

Wang Jingyi

Wang Jingyi is an artist currently living and working in Beijing. She graduated from the Film and Electronic Arts, Bard College, NY in 2018, and then pursued further studies in Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL in London from 2019 to 2020.

Her practice revolves around photography, film, and painting, exploring the relationships between time, memory, and still and moving images. Her recent painting works explore the survival status of non-human/beast beings in the universe, as it progresses from chaos to order. She then uses the uterus as a metaphor for the universe, and examines the process of life birth and the relationship between mother-child-uterus from different perspectives. In her recent work process, she mainly uses animation keyframes and storyboarding to create her works, which will be presented in the future through oil painting and animation.

Her photography and film works have been exhibited in London, the Fisura Experimental Film Festival in Mexico, the VCD in Beijing, and the Banshan Gallery in Ningbo. She also edited the documentary film "Lions, Lies, and Love", which was screened in London in 2022.

· Curator ·
Ruocong Ma

Ruocong Ma is an independent artist from Beijing, born in Guangdong and raised in Beijing. She obtained a Bachelor's degree in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York and later received a Master's degree in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art.

Her work revolves around the broad theme of sex and gender, using personal childhood experiences and the socio-cultural context of East Asia to delve into the violence, melancholy, and feminine qualities hidden within rigid power structures. With a focus on "flesh" and "gaze," she exaggerates and personifies animals or objects, using hazy yet bold strokes to depict power dynamics, emotional turmoil, and conflicts between the attacker and the attacked. The animalistic "gaze" creates a connection between the artwork and the audience, allowing the artist to engage with viewers in a dialogue.
