Bespoke’s collaboration with the historians at Beijing Postcards and the good folks at Penguin Books offers a unique deep dive into the world of 1930s Peking – and a closer look at a murder that shocked the city to its core.

When Pamela Werner’s mutilated body was found at the foot of Beijing’s Dongbianmen watchtower in 1937, it made headlines around the globe. But as the city teetered on the edge of war with Japan, her death and the search for her killer were soon forgotten… That was until Paul French prized open the archives in Kew, England, some 70 years later, and attempted to solve the mystery once and for all.

During this night-time walking tour led by Lars Ulrik Thom, the cast of characters revealed in French’s book Midnight in Peking will be revived once more – from Pamela’s erratic father ETC Werner, to DCI Dennis and Prentice the dentist. We’ll retrace Pamela’s steps on that fateful night, and hear just how difficult it was for Werner to get justice for his daughter.

What’s more, thanks to the hours of original research carried out by Beijing Postcards, several never before seen sources discovered in Beijing's National Archives are now woven into the narrative, including Chinese police reports and articles from the time that offer murder mystery obsessives fun new perspectives on the case.

The walk will end with an exhibition of the source material, historic maps and a cocktail at the Beijing Postcards History Space (provided Dashilan allows visitors at the time). If not, a drink will be provided on the walk instead.
