Taking Reading to a Whole New Level
At SSIS, we aim to develop lifelong readers. We believe that a love of reading has an important role to play in promoting lifelong learning both in childhood and into adulthood.
SSIS Mobile Library
Don’t Stop Reading
Yesterday, we launched our mobile library to continue to cultivate the love of reading in our students during distance learning. Chief librarian Jason Browne, who knows the students and their reading habits very well, carefully selected some books he knew they would enjoy. The first two days saw many excited little book lovers selecting their new reads.
The parents and students had been missing the school, so they happily grabbed the opportunity to come to campus to borrow some books, even if it was just outside the gate. This initiative definitely puts wide smiles on their faces.
Online Reading Platforms
Increased Reading Engagement
Meanwhile, the existing online reading platforms are still available for students to access. The online platforms also provide audio for all books, which allows non-English speaking families to support their children at home. Our teachers have integrated this resource into daily class practice and use it as a homework aid.
Preschool
The Preschool team have gone the extra mile in ensuring reading remains fun and educational for the young ones. The Renaissance myON and Raz-Kids digital libraries are in full swing as always. Teachers are assigning books for students to read to keep them occupied at home. K1s and K2s also have regular meet-ups with the Preschool’s literacy specialist teacher. They have also launched a video series called “Adventures in Literacy” where the teachers read stories, rhymes and chants. Chinese literacy is also enforced with stories being sent home weekly.
Preschool’s Reading Statistics
Books read | Pages | Minutes read | Average pages per week (per student) |
8.11K | 150K | 40.5K | 57.4 pages |
Primary School
Students in Grades 1 to 3 and English Language Acquisition (ELA) students are being encouraged to use Renaissance myON consistently during distance learning. In addition to being a fun and interactive resource for reading materials, students can earn awards and prizes for displaying good reading habits on myON. Other grade levels continue to read independently and record their daily reading logs.
Primary School’s Reading Statistics
Books read | Pages | Minutes read | Average pages per week (per student) |
21.4K | 455K | 162K | 103 pages |
Senior School
Grade 7 and 8 students and Grade 7 to 9 English as a Second Language (ESL) students have access to ReadTheory for additional comprehension practice. ReadTheory is a free online reading comprehension assessment tool for students. It allows students to read a variety of literary passages and answer corresponding comprehension questions. It also tracks student performance for teachers, parents and students.
We are very proud of our students for taking reading to the next level by accomplishing so much at home!
At SSIS, we want students to cultivate a lifelong habit for learning, and reading is one of the most significant ways to get anyone to explore and learn about the world around them.
