Victory Against All Odds!
——A Book Review on The war that Saved My Life
Ten-year-old Ada has a clubfoot and has never left the one floor flat her family shares, Jaime is Ada’s little brother who loves to play. Together the two make a journey with several other evacuees from London to Kent escaping the bombs and bullets that WW2 brings, but also the slaps and punches of their abusive mother “mam”.
While living in London, although Ada is constantly neglected, abused and living in extreme poverty, she never loses hope and strives to make her and Jaime’s lives better. Imprisoned by mam who is ashamed of Ada's clubfoot, she secretly teaches herself how to walk and makes herself useful around house. When WW2 starts, Ada’s brother alongside thousands of children are evacuated to the countryside, Ada spares no time and escapes to Kent with Jaime.
When they arrive at Kent, Ada and Jaime are put into the care of Susan, who is still in mourning for the death of her friend Becky and unwilling to take the children. At first, Ada can not accept the new luxuries and affections that she was showered with for Ada believes Susan to be temporary, but Mam is permanent. However, as days pass, the bond between Susan, Ada, and Jaime grows stronger and stronger. Ada becomes more confident and starts to become comfortable living in this world with sheets, daily baths, and what seems like an unlimited amount of food. She rides, makes friends and even helps the village catch a German spy. Although their life seems to be constantly threatened by German bombs and invasions, Ada found security in her new family. All was well until mam comes back one day out of the blue to take Ada and Jaime away and back to London.
The War that Saved My Life is a masterful piece of literature of a heartwarming story that refuses to be put down. Ada’s continuous perseverance and struggle for a better and happier life is a force that motivates her to be incredible. The same force inspires readers of all ages to do what they can to improve themselves and the world around them. Among the many thousands of books I have read, The War that Saved My Life stands out with its easy to follow story line and optimistic plot. It still remains one of my favorite books of all time and it is the book that I tend to go back to when I’m feeling down or uninspired. The War that Saved My Life may not “save your life” but it will certainly “change your life”.
The War that Saved My Life是一部感人又令人难忘的的伟大作品。 The War that Saved My Life可能不会“救了你一命”,但肯定会“改变你的一生”。
