IBDP Visual Art Program IBDP艺术课程

My name is Douglas Lewis. I’m a practicing artists and curator as well as an IB art teacher. I’ve been working at CISB for 12 years. 

我的名字是Douglas Lewis，我主要教初高中部IB艺术课程，我也是一名艺术家策展人。今年是我在CISB教书的第12年。

The IB visual art program focuses on contemporary art. It is about finding what individuals have to say and how it’s related to contemporary society, how they can convey the world from the way they see it. I see it as an opportunity to help students find themselves in a very simple way. The IB art program is a 2 years program. I prefer to teach each student skills as they need them rather than classroom directed skill development. I do give lessons and teach, but I try to teach students through exploring art by going to the gallery, looking through resource books that I bring to school, online research, etc... I try to get them to find something they love rather than make something they love. 

IB视觉艺术课程专注于当代艺术的学习。主要是关于个人要表达什么，以及它与当代社会的关系，通过他们看待世界的方式来传达信息。我认为对学生们来讲，是认识和找到自我的一个机会。IB艺术课程是2年的课程。在我的课上，我会根据每位学生的需求来教他们所需的绘画技巧。除了在课上教学，我还会带领学生去画廊艺术馆、查阅文献和查找网上资料等形式授课。我一直试着让学生们找到他们喜欢的东西，从而进行学习，而不是由我来制定和找到他们喜欢的内容。

During the 2^nd year, I work with each student and try to learn which university they are interested in. Then I give my opinions and my knowledge of universities around the world including which ones are the best suited for them. I always tell my students that when they choose universities, the most important thing to do is not choose a school by its name. They need to focus on its resources, time, and program design and be based on the direction the student wants to start going in. I want them to care about the content instead of the finished products.

在IB课程的第二年，我会和每位学生沟通，并了解他们对哪些大学感兴趣。然后我会根据我个人对世界大学的了解程度，给出我的建议，像哪些学校是最适合他们申请。一直以来，我都告诉学生们，当他们在选择大学的时候，最重要的不是看重学校的名字。他们需要看学校的资源、设施和课程设计上，是否符合他们想学习的方向。我希望学生们更关心内容本身，而不是最终的作品。

As an art teacher, I’m very proud that our art students have their exhibition at 798’s Bridge Gallery, because not many schools can do that.  As we know, 798 is the most popular of the top three art areas in Beijing. For CISB art students, it’s a very unique experience.

作为一名艺术老师，我感到非常自豪的是我校艺术学生能在798桥画廊举办他们的展览，因为没有多少学校能做到这一点。众所周知，798是北京三大艺术区中最受欢迎的地方，对于CISB艺术学生来说，举办艺术展是一次非常独特的经历。

The graduating “Art Gangstas” have worked hard over the past fourteen months, exploring new ideas, mediums, and methods to create their artworks. The group decided to call the exhibition “In The Making” based on a group idea: art is more about an ongoing process and equally as important as a finished artwork!

在过去的14个月里，他们通过不断寻找新的创意和方法来创作他们的艺术作品。今年的主题是“In The Making”，因为艺术更多的是一个正在进行的过程，这与最后所呈现的艺术品同等重要。

I want to thank our board of directors for supporting our fine arts program, and I’m hoping that support will to continue as we send our students into their best universities around the globe. I want to see all my students develop to become really creative people who have a lot of self-confidence in their creative ability and thinking.

最后，我要感谢我校董事会的支持。学生们的成功离不开学校和家长的支持，我希望有更多学生能申请到理想的大学学习，我也希望所有学生能成为充满创造力、自信和创新的人。
