AT THE LOCAL
(11 August 2023)
The soul of Janice Joplin
was joltin’ and jumpin’
at the sports bar Local in Levittown
with Mia & Mina and their band
—Bobby Freese on drums
Geoff Ungar on lead guitar
Greg Hock on bass guitar—
shakin’ the house down.
It was dark and it was light,
the three armless bandits
and the three large screens featuring
baseball, football, and basketball
all flashin’ to the beat
bouncin’ off the walls while
the very young and old girls & guys
were groovin’ to the sounds
of the night the music lived.
It was a little piece of real Americana,
everybody gettin’ into the rhythm,
cryin’ mouths on the mikes
and the strings of the guitars
and the sticks on the drums by
the reborn Krupa rockin’ in the back
and streamin’ in the crowd
of the young and reclaimed youth
dancin’ and shimmyin’ into it.
It was a night at The Local,
where the birthday band
celebrated the cusp of Mia’s 54th
with slices of cakes, chocolate & vanilla,
passed out on plates to everyone,
and her daughter Tasha & boyfriend Mike,
brother & wife,Scotte & Jackie,
friends—Gio, Donna, Mary, Dianne, Marianne,
Al, Scotty, Denise, Teri, Jen—
were drinkin’ beer and swayin’ to the songs,
and her parents, too, came and sat close to listen
and think of the spirits of their parents
sheppin’ naches from all the joy sparkin’
in this kind of Smoky Joe’s Café.

WOMB
THOUGHTS
(1 January 2010)
In the womb
I was happy
floating about
in my own sea.
I had all
that I needed—
why look for trouble,
exit Eden?
I remember . . .
You don’t believe me,
but I am sure
of this memory.
Now as I look
about me,
at daughter & son
and their children,
I think of
the journey
from then
till now.
From birth
to birth to birth
all over the earth—
the miracle of life!
