Dear Colleagues and Students,
This must have been an unforgettable week in your teaching and learning career. On Monday, classes resumed online, with 252 classes successfully conducted the same day. I spent the first three days observing ongoing classes, and I am delighted to say that our online teaching and learning effort looks very promising so far. As we bear witness to how technology changes our way of learning, we should remember that it is not technology alone that makes this happen, but also the people who have worked so hard behind it. I want to thank the VP Academic Office, AVP Education Office, Registry Office, ITSO, and Deans of Schools for their timely action, thoughtful arrangement, and excellent preparation. I would also like to thank our faculty members who are taking extra efforts to render their online classes no less engaging and inspiring than face-to-face teaching. Thank you!
While I will not venture to give suggestions to our digitally savvy teachers and students on online operations, there is one thing I want to put you on guard against, that is, distraction. Learning from home, with all its advantages, offers enough temptations to prevent you from concentrating – mom’s cooking in the kitchen, pets, snacks, your cellphones, just to name a few. Surely the screen does not monitor everything you do, but concentration is the key to effective learning. I urge self-discipline especially when no one is closely watching.
In the meantime, as you continue to explore our online teaching and learning platform, I hope, with increasing experience, you will arrive at desirable learning outcomes. Should you encounter any difficulties during this process, please do not hesitate to report it through our multiple open channels. Our VP Academic Office, AVP Education Office and school offices would be more than happy to hear your feedback.
I hope the day will come soon when I can welcome you all back to campus. When we do so, we will return more resilient as individuals, and more united as a university.
All the best,
Yangsheng Xu
