FABO Academy X, China, is a 3 week course into digital manufacturing and rapid prototyping. Here you will learn how to envision, prototype and document your ideas through many hours of hands-on experience with digital fabrication tools. The course is based on MIT’s How To Make Almost Anything class and Fab Academy global class and can be used as a stepping stone to enter the full Fab Academy course.

What is Fab Academy?
Fab Academy is a Digital Fabrication program directed by Neil Gershenfeld of MIT's Center For Bits and Atoms and based on MIT's rapid prototyping course, MAS 863: How to Make (Almost) Anything. It offers a 5 month program on digital fabrication, and it could be taken in any of the participating labs.

What is FABO Academy X China?

FABO Academy X is the little brother of Fab Academy. It is a shorter course teaching you the fundamentals of digital manufacturing. FABO Academy X is based on MIT Fab Academy global class and can be used as a stepping stone to enter the full Fab Academy course.

If you have completed Fablab O, FABO Academy X and choose to take the Global Fab Academy course, the tuition fee for Fab Academy X will be deducted from the Fab Academy tuition fee.

GENERAL CLASS STRUCTURE

The principal for teachingis hands on learning: keeping the theory short but dense before continuing onpractical applications. This cycle will be repeated several time during theday.

Part 1 DESIGN

Introduction to what a FabLab is and is not. Introduction to buildingthe documentation web page and ideation process understanding the principles ofproject management. Learn how to use 2D Graphic and 3D Modeling softwares and starttraining on cutting tools and 3D scan.

 INTRO & PREP, DOCUMENTATION & PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Overview of what a Fablabis, its rules and the Fab Charter. Installing softwares needed for the comingweeks. Using Bootstrap framework for building a documentation webpage.Understanding the 12 steps of project management and Spiral development.


Assignment:

1.  Read the fab charter and reflect what it means in practice.

2.  Buildand upload your web page.

3.  Understand the how and why of spiral development.

Learning outcomes:

· Understand the Fablab philosophy.

· Know how HTML code and CSS style sheet are used.

· Understand the how and why of spiral development.

CLASS 2. CLASS 2. 2D DESIGN SOFTWARES, COMPUTER CONTROLLEDCUTTING

Investigating 2D design tools.Learning key concepts of design. Understanding the possibilities andlimitations of laser and vinyl cutting.

 

Assignment:

1.  Design and make a name tagwith a stand and press fit joints. (Laser cutter)

2.  Design and make a stickerstarting from a raster image. (Vinyl cutter)

Learning outcomes:

· Learn the basic operations of 2D Graphic softwares and understand the difference between vector and raster images.

· Be comfortable going from a 2D design to the cutting tool.

· Know what kerf is and how to compensate for it in the design.

· Optimize the use of material.

 

Softwares: Inkscape, Rhinoceros

Machines:Laser Cutter, VinylCutter

3D SCANNING, INTRODUCTION TO 3D MODELING

Learn how to digitize thephysical world using the 3D scanner. Understand how a 3D Modeling softwareworks and use it to modify the file and prepare it for printing. 

 

Assignment:

1.  Scan a person with a 3DScanner.

2.  Repair the mesh and designa base or pedestal with an inscription.

3.  Prepare the model to beprinted as a little bust.

Learning outcomes:

· Understand the advantages and limitations of 3D Scanning.

· Learn the basic operations of 3D Modeling softwares.

· Understand the difference between mesh and solid shapes.

 

Softwares: Rhinoceros, Fusion 360, Skanect

Part 2 FABRICATION

An overview of differentmanufacturing techniques such as additive and subtractive manufacturing, theiradvantages and limitations and applications. Understanding how the machines work,what are the materials available and learning how to draw models that comply tothe design rules of each machine. Introducing precision CNC milling for PCB andlearning soldering techniques.

An introduction todifferent 3D printing technologies. Learn the limitations of what can beprinted and the workflow going from design to print. Analyze and debuggingprinter errors. Design thinking, quickly going from idea to design to 3Dprinted prototype and then back to design.

 

Assignment:

1.  Design and 3D print a modelfor testing the design rules for the printer.

2.  Design and print somethingthat cannot be laser cutted.

3.  Optional: 3D print themodel you scanned.

Learning outcomes:

· Tool chain and workflow for 3D printing.

· Knowledge of the different 3D printing technologies.

· Identifying and solving printer errors.

· Design thinking and rapid prototyping.

SUBTRACTIVE MANUFACTURING, DESKTOP CNC MILLING

Teaching the fundamentalsof milling using the Roland milling machine to create 3 dimensional parts. Designinga 3D model, generating toolpaths and milling a finished object or mold of the model.  Learning parametric tools to generate complihansive geometry.

 

Assignment:

1.  Design a model that complywith the design rules of the machine and tools used.

2.  Mill the model or anegative mold in foam.

3.  Optionally do a cast of itin plaster or concrete.

Learning outcomes:

●  Understand the workflow used in milling a 3D part.

●  Design objects within the limitations of 3 axis machining.

 

Softwares: Rhinoceros+Grasshopper, Fusion 360, CAM Software

Device:Roland MDX-40

ELECTRONIC PRODUCTION: PRECISION CNC MILLING

Make the Fab (tiny) ISPin-circuit programmer form a pre-made design using Fab Modules and the RolandSRM-20. Solder the components and program the board.

 

Assignment:

1.  Make the Fab (tiny) ISPin-circuit programmer.

2.  Load the firmware on it.

Learning outcomes:

●  Milling circuit boards.

●  Soldering skill.

●  Basic knowledge of electricity.

 

Softwares: Inkscape, Fab Modules, Roland CAM

Overview of standardelectronics components, explanation of how they work and what they are used for.Understanding what a microcontroller is, how to write a program to make it dosomething and how to upload it. Learning the workflow of going from design filesto a milled and stuffed board.

ELECTRONIC DESIGN

Using an electronic design softwarelike Eagle to design or modify a simple board sothat it includes at least a button and an LED with current-limiting resistor.Overview of standard electronics components, explanation of how they work andwhat they are used for. Introduction to input and output devices.

 

Assignment:

1.  Design a circuit board that have a button and a LED withcurrent-limiting resistor.

2.  Mill the board, prepare the bill of materials (BOM), solder the components.

Learning outcomes:

●  Drawing a circuit.

●  Understanding the function of each electronic component.

●  Workflows used in circuit board design.

 

Softwares: Eagle, Inkscape, Fab Modules, Roland CAM

Machines: Roland SRM-20

Introducing the ATtiny44 Datasheet, C programming and the Makefile. Learning the basics features of ATtiny44microcontroller. Using Arduino IDE to write or modify a program for yourmicrocontroller. Modifying a Makefile for uploading the program to themicrocontroller.

 

Assignment:

1.  Program yourboard to do something, Read a microcontroller data sheet.

Learning outcomes:

●  What is a Datasheet and how to use it.

Understanding the Makefile and uploading new code to yourcircuit board.

●  Be comfortable with the Arduino IDE environment.

●  Understanding how input and output devices work.

 

Softwares: Arduino IDE, Textwrangler, AVRDude

FINAL DOCUMENTATION& PRESENTATION

Complete all the work of theprevious weeks and update the documentation on the website. Review your workand present it to the class. Imagine a future project.

 

Assignment:

1.  Complete all the work andthe documentation.

2.  Present your work to theclass.

2.  Imagine a project you would like to make in the futurewith your new skills.

Saverio Silli from ItalyGraduated from Fab Academy 2015 and are now the local mentor for Fab Academy2016 at Fablab O Shanghai. He is an Architect, Product Designer,DigitalFabrication specialist, he was Local Instructor @ Fab Foundation / FabAcademy, Volumes / WOMA,Paris, France and manager for Rome Maker Faire.

丁峻峰 Junfeng(Jeff)Ding

Jeff was graduated from HarvardUniversity with master degree specificon Digital Design. Junfeng (Jeff) Ding isfounder of the first Fablab in China,Fablab-Shanghai in College of Design andInnovation, Tongji University. His research and practice are focusing onparametric design andmanufacture, open design and digital fabrication.

本科毕业于东南大学建筑学,并获得哈佛大学设计学和爱荷华建筑学双硕士,自2013年开始,担任同济大学设计创意学院Fablab 主任(中国第一个“开放创造”实验室),创办了 Fablab O品牌。

同济大学大四在读本科生。进入大学时恰逢FablabO Shanghai筹办,加入并成长为其核心成员。参与过比赛举办,工作坊策划开办等各种工作。也以创客身份参加了中美青年创客大赛,优酷土豆黑客松等等多个创客类赛事,并获得了中美创客大赛决赛二等奖,优酷土豆黑客松一等奖等较好的名次。通过在FablabO的学习锻炼,从自行小改小造的兴趣爱好者成长为更规范更成熟的创客精神践行者,并希望能使更多的人熟悉乃至加入创客这个群体,为万众创新做出自己的努力。

As the first built fablab in mainland China, FABO undertakes three missions: community construction (FABO C), education (FABO U) and entrepreneurship (FABO I). FABO is based on the establishment of nationalinnovation ecosystem, trying to link public platform in schools, businesses andcommunities, dock excellent domestic and foreign resources, ventral capital,and promote innovation and creativity into the market, help new round wave ofinnovation and entrepreneurship in China. In the past two years, FABO has held over 100 interdisciplinary open-nights, more than 50 workshops topics on open softwareand hardware, and has hosted US-China Youth Maker Contest three times, Intelligent Wearable Contest among China, Japan and Korea once, PUJIANG INNOVATION FORUM 2015, besides, has also hatched adozen innovative projects. Currently apart from Fablab O Shanghai, Fablab O -Shenzhen was settled in Shenzhen Longong District in June 2015 and also FablabO - Suzhou settledin Suzhou New District just a few weeks before.
