Discover Beijing with this alternative hutong tour.

If you happen to be walking around Beijing’s hutong area and glimpse a group of electric-biking explorers as they whiz past you, chances are you’ve just encountered a Beijing Electric Tour. Run by Dominic and Ilya, this alternative tour through old Beijing will get you weaving in and out of Beijing’s ancient alleyways on two wheels and some extra motor power even with kids in tow.

For our Kids’ Eye View, Aki (10) and Yuri Yraita (11) share with us their recent experience trying out an e-bike tour for the first time.

What is the tour about?
Aki: It was about Chinese culture.Yuri: It was about seeing the wonders of old Beijing.

Have you ever tried an electric bike? Aki: No, I haven't tried one before. This is my first time actually and it was really awesome.Yuri: Yes, I tried it once but not around Beijing.

Have you ever been on a tour like this one?Aki: Not really, have never been on one before.Yuri: Not really.

How many were you on the tour?Aki: There were three of us but my father and I went really slow.Yuri: Three in total, including my father and little brother.

Where did you guys go what were your favourite spots and why?Aki: I like the bell tower even though its history was quite sad. However I like how the kids saved their fathers in the end.Yuri: Mine was the bell tower because the story was really sad.

Did the bikes go too fast or too slow? How did you prepare for your tour?Aki: Well at the start we went slow, but then we went much faster and I got scared but I got used to it so it’s cool now.Yuri: I only tried the e-bike once, two days before the tour, and they only had one type of bike which was really simple to use and to manoeuvre. The e-bike was fast but it was really easy for me to adjust to it and I did pretty well; it's just like riding a bike.

How was your tour guide?
Aki: He was good, he talked a lot about the places we went too and he was really patient with us.Yuri: He was very nice, told us all about the history of the houses and locations on the tour.

Would you recommend it to your friends? Why or why not? Aki: Yes, I think it would be really fun for a family day and I had a lot of fun.Yuri: Yes, I would tell my friends about it because you get to ride on an ebike and see different places around Beijing.

Do you think that parents of younger children can bring their younger kids along too?Aki: Yes I rode with my dad and I’m the youngest one.Yuri: Yes, I think that people all ages can go on that tour. My brother rode with my dad and they both had fun.
