Dental Implants: things to know about replacing missing teeth

BJU TimeOutFamily 2020-11-16

What is a dental implant?
Also called an artificial tooth, a dental implant is one of the most popular restoratives for missing tooth or teeth. A dental implant doesn't mean to GROW a tooth in the jaw bone. It is composed of an implant body, abutment and crown through medical means and industrial precise design and manufacturing. A dental implant is made of pure titanium and has a cylindrical shape or root form.

What is a Dental Implant?

Three to six months after a surgical insertion into the jaw bone where the tooth is missing, the dental implant will fully integrate with the surrounding bone, making an artificial crown and connecting it with a dental implant through the abutment. That is when the dental implant is completed.
How do dental implants work?

Why do we need dental implants?
Dental implants can achieve the functions and appearance of the natural teeth without harming the healthy, adjacent teeth.  It is known by dental professionals as the first choice for replacing missing teeth and is also accepted by more and more dental patients.

If you have a missing tooth, it is important to replace it with a dental implant. Functionally, the adjacent good teeth will move and close the space and therefore cause malocclusion. It is highly recommended to replace a missing tooth within a year. Aesthetically, a missing tooth causes bone loss and therefore, facial change, which may make you may look older than your age.

Something you might ask the dentist…
Q. Do dental implants stay forever?A. Not if the post-care is maintained.  Like natural teeth, we need to care for them by brushing, flossing twice a day, and seeking professional care every 3-6 months.

Q. Does it hurt when putting in the implant and after the procedure? How long does it take?A. You will not feel the pain during the procedure because local anaesthesia will be provided. For people who are anxious about the surgery, we can also provide laughing gas, sedation and general anaesthesia. Medications will be provided after the surgery so that 99% of the patients do not feel the pain after the surgery. Implant surgery usually takes about one to two hours depending on the number of implants and the complexity of the procedure.

Q: How long does an implant take?A. Implant therapies usually have two stages. The first is a surgical placement of the implant; the second is the restoration of the implant.  It takes about three to six months for the implant to completely integrate before a final restoration can be made.

Q.  Can every missing tooth be replaced with a dental implant?A.  No. Not every patient or every missing tooth or teeth can have dental implant therapy. Some people with certain medical conditions are not eligible for dental implant therapy. The key condition when placing an implant is to have enough bone volume and good bone quantity.  We cannot place an implant if there is not enough bone.  Sometimes, bone grafting procedures are necessary prior to placing the implant.
