The best ski destinations in Beijing and Chongli for families

Looking for somewhere to go skiing this winter? Here are some places to take the family out to the slopes in Beijing and neighbouring Chongli – the venue of the 2022 Winter Olympics – this season.


   Within Beijing   

Huaibei International Ski Resort

An oldie but goodie, Huaibei International Ski Resort is one of Beijing’s oldest resorts. Located 85km north of downtown in Huairou district, the resort is surrounded by the Great Wall on three sides. Huaibei has seven trails and is good for kids who are just starting out as six of those trails are for beginners. If you’re only venturing out to enjoy a cup of coffee with a view, Huaibei has a western café, a Chinese restaurant and a couple of snack bars with seating areas to take it all in.
PricesEntrance fee 30RMB (no access to slopes)
Passes Weekday pass from 38-88RMB (rates vary from Mon-Fri, but include whole day access); weekend pass 178RMB (whole day access). Public holidays 198RMB (whole day access). Night skiing 58RMB (from 4.30- 9.30pm).

Getting there The ski resort runs a shuttle bus from Ginza mall at Dongzhimen station’s exit B at 8.10am returning at 4.30pm. Tickets are 150RMB on weekdays; 210RMB on weekends. Jundushan Ski Resort 军都山滑雪场

Jundushan Ski Village is the closest resort to the city centre with only 34km standing between you and the slopes. That said, it has only five slopes, but kids will benefit from its large teaching area and a sledding trail for beginners. It also offers night skiing with great views across the city. If some members of the family aren’t interested in winter sports, split up – Jundushan is close to the Ming Tombs, Jiuhua Spa resort and is also near the Juyongguan and Badaling sections of the Great Wall. Prices Entrance fee 20RMB; 30RMB public holidays (no access to slopes).
Passes Weekday pass from 120RMB (for 2 hours) to 240RMB (for 8 hours). Weekend pass from 180RMB (for 2 hours) to 420RMB (for 8 hours). Public holidays from 200RMB (for 2 hours) to 420RMB (for 8 hours). Night skiing 100RMB.

Nanshan Ski Village 南山滑雪场

Venturing a little further again, Nanshan is 62km northeast of the city in Miyun county. As one of the largest ski resorts near Beijing, it has a whopping 25 trails. There’s a great mix of trails for expert, intermediate and beginner skiers, as well as a 1,318m long toboggan for a thrilling ride down the mountain. The resort is also equipped with three chair lifts, 13 drag lifts and three magic carpets to make your day on the trails easier. For the little ones, they can try their hand at snow tubing, sledding or playing with snow in the DIY playground.
Prices Entrance fee 20RMB (Book at least a day in advance. Package includes entrance fees and equipment.)

Vanke Shijinglong Ski Resort 石京龙滑雪场


Photo: Vanke Shijinglong Ski ResortOpened in 1999, Shijinglong is the oldest ski resort in Beijing and remains popular as it’s relatively close to the city at only 100km away. A rarity is its six south-facing trails that allow skiers to enjoy the sunshine. A resort geared towards lower-level skiers, there is only one advanced trail. They also have a wide variety of activities for kids on the east side of the resort, from a playground to snow tanks.

Yuyang International Ski Resort 渔阳滑雪场

Yuyang International Ski Resort 渔阳滑雪场 Yuyang Ski Resort is a stone’s throw from Tianjin, where many of its skiers come from. Situated on Qinglongshan, Yuyuang offers some great views of Pinggu district. There are eight trails: two advanced, two intermediate, two beginners and one just for snowboarding. Movement along the trails is facilitated by two chair lifts, six drag lifts and three magic carpets.

Wanlong Ski Resort 万龙滑雪场

The resort has 22 trails, with a good mix of advanced, intermediate and beginner runs and an abundance of cableways. Wanlong is surrounded by popular during ski season, so book ahead. At the top of Honghualiangshan is Wanlong Woodhouse, made from imported Finnish wood. This lodge is made for skiers to snuggle up by the fire to enjoy the view of the mountains. Thaiwoo Resort has 28 ski trails for all levels of skiers. It has a comprehensive beginner ski centre and runs winter camps for children. It also hosts a couple of festivals such as the Thaiwoo FIS Freestyle Ski Moguls World Cup as well as other events. Prices Entrance fee 300RMB weekday, 400RMB weekend Passes (includes lift pass and equipment rental) Weekday pass 412RMB (for 4 hours) to 784RMB (for 3 days), weekend pass 395RMB (for 4 hours) to 941RMB (for 3 days). Equipment rental 20-50RMB per piece (deposit of 800RMB) Getting there The K43 train runs from Beijing Railway Station to Zhangjiakou South Station at 10.55am and arrives at 2.27pm. The K44 leaves from Zhangjiakou South Station at 4.17pm and arrives in Beijing at 7.42pm. Fares begins at 121.5RMB. Duolemeidi Ski Resort 多乐美地滑雪场

Escape to Italy at Duolemeidi, just 220km north of Beijing the resort is great for skiers of all levels with its range of slopes. It boasts eight long and wide runs, with four lifts to connect you to the trails. Kids aren’t left out of the fun with a dedicated Kids’ Park to frolic at. Prices Passes Weekday pass from 200RMB (for 4 hours) to 490RMB (for 2 days); weekends from 290RMB (for 4 hours) to 630RMB (for 2 days). Public holidays from 340RMB (for 4 hours) to 750RMB (for 2 days). Fulong Four Seasons Town

Another mega ski resort to sprout up in the area in anticipation of the 2020 Winter Olympics is Fulong Four Seasons Town. It has one of the most ski trails – 37 in all of varying difficulties – and its longest runs 3.7km with a total ski area of 750,000sqm. Children will love its snow entertainment facility while its 48,000sqm hot springs centre onsite should soothe any aches from a day and night – Fulong also offers night skiing – of shredding the slopes. Prices
Passes Full-day passes from 8.30am-4.30pm Mon-Fri 399RMB; Sat-Sun 529RMB, includes skiing tickets and cable car tickets. Skiing is free for children under 12 years of age but parents must have a ticket as well and are required to purchase the 20RMB insurance fee.Lessons Two-hour English lessons on weekdays are 900RMB and 1,000RMB on weekends; Two-hour Chinese lessons are from 650RMB. Classes are also available for children and adults from 200RMB.
