Hikes this weekend (August 20-21), Tongren trip photos

Beijing Hikers BeijingHikers北京爱山 2023-09-22

Hey, hi, hallo, here are the hikes for this week.

We have our first camping trip of the season, and it’s booked out and ready to go. Your next chance for camping is September 3-4, sign up quick!

If you’re not fussed about going over the border (into Tianjin) there’s the Huangyaguan Great Wall hike on Saturday. (August 20)

For an excellent Great Wall hike that is well within Beijing’s borders, check out the Jiankou to Beigou Village hike on Sunday. (August 21)

If you’re in the Shunyi area, we’re swinging by DDs Mart and Pinnacle Plaza on the way to the Ming Village on Sunday.

I don’t want to jinx it, but we’ve travelled out of Beijing (and made it back in!) a few times on multi-day trips in the last few months.

One of those trips was to see the ‘Festival of the Sixth Month’ in Qinghai. See below for some photos from that trip.

The next trip is to Guizhou, for the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday.

Tongren’s Festival of the Sixth Month, Qinghai Province, 2022/07

In July we travelled to Tongren (Qinghai Province) to see the ‘Festival of the Sixth Month’. (That’s the sixth month of the lunar calendar, by the way.)

The festival isn’t in a single location, but spreads out through the monasteries, temples, and villages in the Tongren area. Local shamans lead ceremonies and rituals by entering a trance state to channel the spirit of the Mountain God.

During the trip we travelled all around to see the different ceremonies, and we saw a lot! We also hit the hills for some high-altitude hiking, getting up to over 4,000m above sea level.

See some of Huijie’s photos below. (Note: a few of the photos include face piercing and forehead slicing.)

Kids getting ready for their turn.

And older kids, too.

The shaman has sliced his forehead to get ready for the face-piercing.
