英诗原创| Menai Elegies-The First Elegy

Menai Elegies
The First Elegy
By Peter Jingcheng Xu

Would you, my Muse, please grant me the power to sing,
to praise the great beauty and glory of nature?
Tongue-tied, I search for metaphors that fail
my mind –the golden sickle moon, the crescent lake,
the sooty hill road, the awful woods, and the like.
Even if it's considered as simplicity,
I find myself hard ‘nd impotent to speak for her.
Even though I can strip her to the nakedness,
her inner glory shines bright and blind to my eyes
and my sense. The moon reflected in the deep lake
appearing dolorous ‘nd heart-broken as if to moan
about the waves aroused by the breeze that obscures
her countenance that is worth naming and echoing.
For the obscured, the known, the named and the nameless,
the real, the false, Angel, please untie my tongue!
The tongue to me is what the wings are to you!
Vocal music and poetry need a strong tongue;
otherwise, the woods will huff and puff to the moon,
the moon will grieve over the lake, and I silent
will groan in the darkness, further away from you.
