纽约最著名的爵士俱乐部SMALLS的老板Spike到访东岸爵士俱乐部写了游记:
My last two evening in Beijing I visited a little bar called "The East Shore Jazz Cafe". As soon as I walked in my head began to spin. The vibe was totally New York-esque but not in a contrived way, genuinely so. It was about 75 seats surrounding a stage, a bar, a piano and photos of Miles Davis and Dexter Gordon on the walls. There was an excellent band playing that night (musicians who's names I couldn't pronounce if my life depended on it) and a great feeling in the room. I decided to come back the next night to see a musician I knew who was playing there - guitarist Rafal Sarnecki - who was playing with some Chinese jazz musicians, all of them excellent. I was extremely impressed when Rafal actually introduced the band in Chinese! The audience was young with some barbarians like myself but mostly what seemed to be Chinese students from the university there. I got introduced to the owner who was overjoyed to meet me! He couldn't believe that the owner of the world-famous Smalls Jazz Club was there. I couldn't believe that he had even heard of us. We sat on the terrace and sipped on some gin and tonics and talked about jazz, New York, the scene and all the cats we knew in common - Eric Alexander, Dave Kikoski, Vince Herring. We sat and rapped until the club was closed and then embraced with a fraternal bear hug. He proclaimed us brothers and I exited into the Beijing night.
I've said it before but the universality of jazz music never fails to amaze me. Where ever you find it, be it Beijing or West 10th Street, it's always the same - the cats loving the music and revering the heroes. The same stories, jokes and above all the love. It's a true world-music that seems to touch anyone inspired by it. My motto for SmallsLIVE is "We Are Dedicated To World Peace Through Music" and I stand by that. There's something about the spirit of this music that unifies, cuts through cultural boundaries and goes directly to the heart.
