Engineers in China have outlined plans to build the world’s longest tunnel, as part of a water diversion project.
中国的工程师计划建造世界上最长的隧道，这是南水北调项目的一部分。
On October 29th, the South China Morning Post reported the proposed tunnel which could be as long as 1,000 kilometerswould be used to transport water from Tibet to Xin Jiang.
10月29号， 南华早报报道计划建造的这条隧道长达1000千米，将用来把西藏的水调到新疆。
Xin Jiang is, for the most part, comprised of desert and mountains.
新疆的大多数地区都是沙漠和山地。
The lack of rainfall it receives currently makes a majority of the region uninhabitable.
因为缺少降雨，该地区的大部分地区都不适宜人类生存。
Under the new plan, at least 10 billion tons of water will be diverted from Tibet’s Yarlung Tsangpo River to Xin Jiang Taklamakan desert each year.
在新的计划里，每年将会有100亿吨水从西藏的雅鲁藏布江调入新疆的塔克拉玛干沙漠。
The central government is now reviewing a draft proposal for the project.

The plan however, could run into opposition from other countries.

Downstream the Yarlung Tsangpo flows into India where it becomes the Brahmaputra River.

Millions of people in the India’s northeast depend on the river as a source of livelihood.
