It's Left-Handers Day!

Here's some facts about the wonderful left

From scissors[剪刀] and smudged ink[墨水污迹], spiral-bound notebooks[螺旋装订的笔记本] to impossible-to-use tin openers[开罐器], the lefties' struggle is real.

To mark International Left-Handers Day, which falls every year on August 13, here's some lovely left-leaning[左倾的] facts. So take a moment to pause and appreciate the plight[困境] of your left-handed friends living in a right-handed world.

1) Just 10 per cent of the world's population is left-handed and this has remained roughly the case for thousands of years. Men are also more likely to be left-handed.

2) Historically left-handed people were considered inferior, with the use of the left hand being associated with witchcraft[巫术;魔法].

3) Left-hand shakes are a sign of disrespect. This derives from the Middle Ages where people used to use their left hand to wipe after going to the toilet.

4) Wedding rings worn on the third finger of the left hand originated with the Greeks and Romans, who wore them to fend of[阻挡;阻止] evil associated with the left-hand.

5) There's even a place called Left Hand. It's in Virginia, US but sadly the town isn't named after its left-handed community. It's actually named after nearby Lefthand Run creek[小溪;小湾].

6) Five out of the last seven US presidents write with their left-handGerald Ford, Ronald ReaganGeorge H.W. BushBill Clinton, and Barack Obama.

7) Lefties are also called "southpaws[左撇子;用左手投球的投手]". The term was coined in baseball to describe a left-handed pitcher.

8) Lefty Men Have Something More

Good morning, I'm Renee Montagne, with congratulations to left-handed men. Not just because this Sunday is International Left-Handers Day, but because a new study shows southpaws are richer than righties, 15 percent richer for left-handed men who attended college, and 26 percent richer if they graduated. Researchers at Lafayette College and Johns Hopkins University can't explain the wage difference, and they don't know why women lefties don't have the same advantage.(NPR News August 11, 2006)
