Jinjiang is located on the southeast coast of Fujian province. Despite occupying only a two hundredth of the province's land, it accounts for nearly 1/16 of its economic output.

Forty years ago, it was an undeveloped region, whose economy was largely reliant on agriculture, but by 2017, Jinjiang was ranked among the five most competitive county level economies in the country, a position it had held for the past six years.

It's estimated that nearly 1.6 billion pairs of sneakers are produced every year in Jinjiang. That's enough for nearly one-fifth of the world's population!

It's a system that's used in the movie industry, in the games industry, so things like Avatar and lots of the common computer games, when they're trying to capture the motion of the human body, they're using little markers like this and the camera system here is tracking the markers.

Since China's reform and opening-up began, Jinjiang has experienced an economic boom.

There are now more than 50,000 private enterprises based here, making it home to more Chinese brands than any other county-level city in China.

Branding was somewhat of an alien concept to Jinjiang's early entrepreneurs. As business boomed, however, the effectiveness of such marketing techniques soon became obvious.

So far 92 companies from Jinjiang have made investments overseas, including Anta Sports, which owns the rights to the FILA brand in China, 361 Degrees, which formed a joint venture with Finnish outdoor sports chain ONE WAY SPORT, and Hengan Group, which has established an overseas marketing center.

As Jinjiang's brands gradually go global, the city has also taken on a variety of nicknames. Due to its status as a global shoe manufacturing center, the city is sometimes known as the "sneaker capital of the world".

It's also been labeled the world's "jacket capital", China's "umbrella capital", a leading light* in the country's food industry and an industrial center for textiles.
