Sea power

Both America and Taiwan alleged[宣称;断言] that China has placed surface-to-air missiles[地对空导弹] on the South China Sea’s Woody Island[永兴岛], which is claimed also by Taiwan and Vietnam. If true it would heighten military tensions[加强军事紧张局势] in the disputed sea[争议海域], through which a third of world trade passes. China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, called the allegation an invention[捏造;虚构] of the Western media.

China decided to move more than 9,000 people to prevent electromagnetic interference[电磁干扰] with the world’s largest radio telescope[射电望远镜,无线电天文望远镜], which will start to operate later this year in the south-western province of Guizhou. Chinese scientists involved in the project told the country’s state-owned news agency that the instrument would help in the search for intelligent life[有智生命] elsewhere in the universe.

Britain said that the disappearance of a bookseller in Hong Kong, presumed to have been abducted by Chinese security agents, amounted to[共计;意味着;发展成;折合] a “serious breach[严重违约]” of an agreement reached between China and Britain in 1984 on the handover[(所有权或管理权的)移交] of the colony[殖民地] to Chinese rule. The bookseller, Lee Bo, is a British citizen. Four of his colleagues are also believed to have been snatched while visiting Thailand and the Chinese mainland. China has confirmed it is detaining[拘留;扣留] them.

abduct [æbˈdʌkt]
