Our next webinar on Tuesday 27th October will focus on the latest forms of Energy Storage being developed for the offshore wind industry. Our first speaker, Professor Ding Yulong, from the University of Birmingham, will introduce some of his work in developing liquid air energy storage technology, as well as a broader look at some other competing approaches. Our second speaker will be Andrew Skocz from Aqua Power Ltd, and speak upon wind innovations from Scotland.

Professor DING Yulong FREng FIChemE FRSC CREng is the founding Chamberlain Chair of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham and director of Birmingham Centre for Energy Storage. He is a newly elected Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering (2020), an elected Fellow of Institution of Chemical Engineers (2019), a charted chemical engineer (2019), and a Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (2012). His current research covers both fundamental (multiphase transport phenomena across length scales) and applied (new energy conversion and storage technologies) aspects.
He invented liquid air energy storage technology and led the initial stage of the technology development and validation, which is commercialised by Highview Power, a UK engineering company He developed composite phase change materials for thermal energy storage and associated large-scale manufacture technologies, leading to large scale commercial applications with a total installation of 300+ MW / 1.2+ GWh so far. His work on the passive cooling container technology for cold chain transportation has started commercial demonstration.
He is a receiver of three IChemE Global Awards – Energy, Research Project and Outstanding Achievement Awards (2019); Distinguished Energy Storage Individual Award (Beijing International Energy Storage and Expo, 2018); Cryogenic Energy Storage Research Chair Award (Royal Academy of Engineering, 2014); Energy & Environment Award and Technology and Innovation Grand Prix Award (Liquid Air Energy Storage, ‘The Engineer’ Magazine, 2011).
He has published over 450 technical papers with ~250 in peer-reviewed journals (H Index of ~ 65), filed over 70+ patents, and co-founded Dispersia Ltd and more recently Kelvin Thermotech Ltd. He currently serves on IChemE Publication Medal Assessment Panel; European Technology and Innovation Platform Working Group on Smart Networks for Energy Transition (ETIPSNET); Royal Society Net Zero Carbon Panel; Steering Group of Royal Society study on long-term large-scale energy storage; UK Molten Salt Advisory Committee; IEA Annex 36 Carnot Batteries; and Editorial Boards of Journal of Energy Storage (Wiley), Journal of Thermal Science (Springer), Particuology (Elsevier), and Energies & Applied Science (MDPI)..

About the Birmingham Centre for Energy Storage (BCES)

Here is a brief introduction to BCES: BCES was set in 2013 and is a distributed centre across Chemical Engineering (hub), Mechanical Engineering, Materials & Metallurgy, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and the Business School (www.birmingham.ac.uk/energystorage). It consists of two inter-related sub-centres for Cryogenic Energy Storage and Thermal Energy Storage. The research themes of the BCES include: novel thermal energy storage (TES) materials covering formulation, characterization and manufacture; TES components and devices for stationary and mobile applications; TES systems integration & optimization; energy storage economics & policy; data analytics; liquid air energy storage; TES for electrical vehicles; cold chain transportation; thermal energy conversion; and TES applications..

Andrew has been directly involved in the development of 12 different Marine Renewable Energy systems.

On 22nd September, Scottish Development International and the China-Britain Business Council hosted the fourth of six webinars on UK-China Offshore Wind Collaboration. Once again we were joined by two excellent speakers, David Findlay, from ORE Catapult’s TORC and Gary McConnell, Commercial Director from the Aleron Group. They discussed the important role that R&D innovations are having in the offshore wind sector and examples of where this is happening between the UK and China.

UK-China R&D Collaboration

The TUS-ORE Catapult Centre was first established in 2018 as a Joint Venture between the UK’s Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult and China’s TUS Wind, a subsidiary of TUS Holdings. It is designed to support SMEs to enter the Chinese market through assistance and investment, promote academic exchange and demonstrate new technologies through a 300MW wind farm off the coast of Shandong.
David introduced three live examples of innovative Scottish companies who were being supported by TORC, including REOptimise System’s ACTOS software for increasing the yield of variable-speed turbines, Miros’ radar-based IoT sensors, which can increase weather windows by up to 15%, and finally Ecosse IP, whose FLOWT Systems had been the subject of our previous session focused on floating technologies.
David concluded with mention of the work that TORC are involved in Improved Practice Guidelines for Cost Reduction in Offshore Wind (ImPG CROWD) Project, aimed at sharing best practice with the Chinese offshore wind market in their own efforts in driving down the LCOE.

Cutting-edge Subsea ROVs

Like so many other firms in the offshore wind sector, Aleron Subsea originally transitioned their core expertise over from the oil and gas sector, but renewables currently account for up to 80% of their work in the North Sea. Through a series of animations and videos, Gary introduced a few of their most impressive proprietary ROVs, including the AUXROV – a veritable subsea Swiss Army Knife – and the impressive MultiROV.
In addition to their own systems, Gary also introduced two items of complimentary equipment from the subsea surveying company Pangeo Subsea and SAAB Seaeye’s Sabertooth hybrid ROV/UAV. Whilst the technological ability of UAVs has been proven, it was indicated that there is still some reluctance in the market to accepting the role they could play in ongoing monitoring of subsea structures but that such views were fast changing, especially as wind farms became more remote and in deeper water where access is more of a challenge.
It will be interesting to see how quickly the Chinese market is willing to adopt such innovations as its installed capacity expands in the next few years.
