Manifesto of Open Source Village | 開源村宣言

Principles

These are what we aspire to be. Due to on-the-ground considerations we may not always hit the mark, but we'll take the best stab at it we can.

  1. Keen to be Green: The Open Village is being built as an example of how we can make villages, communities, and the world a better place. We don't want to burn up dead dinosaurs and fill the air with crap when we could be using greener solutions.

  2. Radical Inclusion: Anyone may be a part of Open Source Village community. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.

  3. Communal Effort: Our community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that support such interaction.

  4. Walking the Walk: Our name is the Open Source Village, and that's not just marketingspeak. We believe it in our very bones and strive to make everything as open as possible.

  5. Perfect is the Enemy of Good: That being said, in some cases there are no open projects that fit our requirements (or sometimes nothing in that space at all). At times like these we'll hold our noses and “patch the hole” with a closed-source equivalent until we have time to work on a more open solution.

  6. Money != Evil: Ecological sustainability needs financial sustainability to keep it going. We're not opposed to monetizing the village (where appropriate) to keep the lights on.

  7. Think Outside the Boxes: A village is more than concrete boxes that people live and work in. It's about institutions, businesses, open spaces, community, but most of all the people. How do we go beyond open source and extend the philosophy to other areas of life?

  8. How would your Granny like to Live?: We're a bunch of geeks, designers, engineers, philosophers and generally crazy people. While most of us would jump at the chance to go to Burning Man and sleep in a yurt, that's not the case for the majority of humanity. The Open Source Village is aimed at everyone, so let's try to filter our crazy (seriously, most people do not want public transportation via log flume).
