Valentine's Day, also called Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on February 14. Originating as a Western Christian feast day honoring one or two early saints (圣徒) named Valentinus, Valentine's Day is recognized as a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance in many regions around the world, although it is not a public holiday (公休) in any country.
The day first became associated with romantic love within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer (杰弗里·乔叟,英国中世纪著名作家) in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love (典雅爱情) flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery (糖果、巧克力等甜食), and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). In Europe, Saint Valentine's Keys (圣瓦伦丁之匙) are given to lovers "as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver’s heart (开启送匙者之心门)", as well as to children, in order to ward off epilepsy (预防癫痫)(called Saint Valentine's Malady). Valentine's Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves (白鸽), and the figure of the winged Cupid (双翼爱神丘比特). Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced (批量生产的) greeting cards.
在当下各种表白方式层出不穷
经典的地位依然无法撼动
下面和团团一起走进经典的情诗吧~
《When You Are Old》
William Butler Yeats
When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.
