经过多次讨论、辩论和调研，牛津辞典2016年年度词汇最终授予了——post-truth /ˌpəʊs(t)ˈtruːθ/，形容词，其定义为“relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief”。该词用以形容某种情景，即客观事实与其说影响公共舆论的形成，不如说更能吸引人们情感和个人信念，目前尚无既定翻译，小编暂定为“后真相的”。
该词为何当选？
Post-truth 的概念已经出现有十年之久，但牛津辞典观察到该词今年多次出现使用高峰，一是在英国进行欧洲公投之时，一是美国总统大选背景下。该词和特定名词组合出现，如短语 post-truth politics（后真相政治）。
Post-truth 在2016年的表现
Post-truth 一词在政治评论中已经从一个边缘性词汇成长为支柱型术语，现在常常出现在主流出版物中，在各类标题中无需进一步说明或定义。

Post-truth 的简要发展史
复合词 post-truth 是大量加上前缀 post- 而形成词义的又一例证，这一前缀组合法在近些年越来越多地出现。该词中的前缀并非仅仅在时间上指一个特定情境或事件之后（例如 post-war / 战后、post-match / 赛后），其含义更像是指“在时间上特定概念已经不重要或不再相关之后”。这种细微差别似乎起源于20世纪中期，形成了例如 post-national（1945年出现）和 post-racial（1971年出现）。
Post-truth 一词以当前含义出现看来是在塞尔维亚裔美国剧作家 Steve Tesich 于1992年在《The Nation》杂志上发表的一篇文章中。Tesich 在对伊朗门丑闻（Iran-Contra scandal）和波斯湾战争做出评述时感叹道：“We, as a free people, have freely decided that we want to live in some post-truth world.”在 Tesich 文章中使用 post-truth 一词之前也有人用过该词，但很明显仅仅表示“after the truth was known”，并不具有我们正在谈及的新内涵，即事实真相本身已经成为无关紧要的了。
2004年，Ralph Keyes 的图书《The Post-truth Era》出版，而在2005年，美国喜剧演员 Stephen Colbert 让另一个具有相似概念的单词得以流传——truthiness，其定义为“the quality of seeming or being felt to be true, even if not necessarily true”。Post-truth 一词将这种孤立的武断的特点延伸至我们时代的一般特征。
