“Wish You Were Here” is the title track on Pink Floyd’s 1975 album. The song’s lyrics encompass writer Roger Waters’ feelings of alienation from other people, drawing particular inspiration from his old friend Syd Barrett, the founder of Pink Floyd who left the band due to mental health issues. More important than naming this great band, however, was Syd’s contribution to establishing the band’s psychedelic, experimental and profound musical ethos. No one can deny Syd’s talent. But sadly, like many geniuses, Syd shone too brightly and too briefly.
So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell
Blue skies from pain
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade,
your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange,
a walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I Wish You Were Here
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year
Running over the same old ground
What have we found?
The same old fears
Wish You Were Here
