北京大学成立于1898年，是中国近代史上第一所国立大学。北京大学现由五个学院组成：人文科学、社会科学、理学、医学和信息工程。学校设有53个院系，120个本科专业，242个研究生培养计划，212个博士研究生培养项目。
Founded in 1898, Peking University (PKU) is the first national university in Chinese modern history. Peking University now consists of five faculties: Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, Medicine, and Information and Engineering. 清华大学成立于1911年，最初以“清华学堂”的名字命名，1912年更名为“清华学校”。大学部成立于1925年。“国立清华大学”的名称于1928年被采纳。学院非常重视中西文化、理学与人文、古代与现代之间的兼容并蓄。清华学者王国维、梁启超、陈寅恪、赵元仁作为国学院的“四大导师”，始终崇尚这一信念，并对清华大学日后的发展产生了深远影响。
Tsinghua University was established in 1911, originally under the name “Tsinghua Xuetang”. The school was renamed "Tsinghua School" in 1912. The university section was founded in 1925. The name “National Tsinghua University” was adopted in 1928.
The faculty greatly valued the interaction between Chinese and Western cultures, the sciences and humanities, the ancient and modern. Tsinghua scholars Wang Guowei, Liang Qichao, Chen Yinque and Zhao Yuanren, renowned as the "Four Tutors"in the Institute of Chinese Classics, advocated this belief and had a profound impact on Tsinghua's later development.

On October 1, 1949, People’s Republic of China was founded. In order to cultivate talents with professional knowledge and basic understanding of Marxism-Leninism to construct the new China, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China decided to establish Renmin University of China by merging the North China University and the China University of Political Science and Law.

Beijing Jiaotong University is a national key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education and now is jointly supported by the Ministry of Education, the China Railway Corporation and Beijing Municipal Government. BJTU is one of the first universities selected into the “National 211 Project” and the “985 Strength Discipline Innovation Platform” project, one of the first institutions authorized to confer master’s and doctoral degrees. 北京科技大学成立于1952年，是在全国高等教育体系重构的背景下，由五所国内知名大学里的最优学科组建而成。北京科技大学以冶金和材料科学的研究而闻名。它的重点学科是工程学，兼顾理学、管理学、人文学、经济学和法学。它是首批获得国家批准建立研究生院的大学之一，并入选中国“211工程”，旨在二十一世纪发展一百所一流大学。2006年学院被选为“国家优势学科创新平台”试点院校。
The University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) was founded in 1952 following the amalgamation of the best departments in related fields of five eminent universities as a result of a nationwide reorganization of the higher education system. USTB is renowned for its study of metallurgy and materials science. Its main focus is on engineering; at the same time it maintains a balanced programme of science, management, humanities, economics and law. It was one of the first universities to be entitled to establish state-approved graduate schools and was chosen to be part of China's "211 Project", which is designed to develop a hundred first rate universities in the 21st century. In 2006 it was also selected as one of a select group of pilot universities for the "Platform for National Advanced Disciplines Innovation" program.
