The emotions between a musician and their instrument are shared – when the same piece of music is performed while sad or excited, the mood that emerges is completely different. The music played through the instrument provides an accurate presentation of the musician’s inner consciousness, similar to how the brush strokes and colours in a painting reflect the artist’s state of mind. An instrument is the extension of the musician’s body, and the musician controls the instrument just like how the soul controls the body.
“Soul / Hun Po” is the Taoist’s interpretation of soul and spirit: the three ethereal souls, or Hun (HEAVENLY SOUL, EARTHLY SOUL, and HUMANLY SOUL belong to the Yang energy and constitutes the soul of man; while belonging to the Yin energy are the seven corporeal souls, or Po (POWER, WISDOM, ENERGY, STRENGTH, CENTEREDNESS, ESSENCE, BRAVERY), each controlling the emotions of joy, anger, worry, fear, love, hatred, desire, and constitutes the spirit of man. While Yang and Yin dominate the universe, the soul and spirit control man’s behaviour.

Based on the above concepts, I designed and created a musical instrument from the pine wood box of a red wine bottle, using it as the outer body. It is accompanied with a set of vertical springs, a set of extension springs, a set of steel rods, a finger piano, a zither, a theremin, and a cajon. These seven groups of sound-producing instruments each correspond to the seven souls of man. When played and processed through effect modules that represent each of the three ethereal souls, it produces various types of strange and psychedelic sounds. With the instrument’s unique resemblance to a Dharma altar, and has ‘arms’ that wave when played, it seems to release the confined ‘souls’, hence why I named the instrument ‘The 7 Po’.

Since I created it in June, the process of moulding in ‘The 7 Po’ has been like taming a wild animal. I constantly adjust its structure, and it has also reshaped my concept of music. Gradually, I turned its 'imperfections' into distinctive features and unleashed its potential. 'The 7 Po' is like a sound palette, containing a variety of different waveforms that expand my imagination: the short wavelengths of percussion instruments take the shape of shipping vessels and buildings, the infinitely long tune of electronic sounds are like the distant undulating mountains, the spring's full bass-like sounds are the trees, the sharp high-pitched Guzheng sounds are the bushes, and the roaring noises make the turbulent waves.
The "spirits" it unleashed became the source of all the works in this exhibition. The 14 pieces of Chinese painting in this exhibition are all transformed from the corresponding musical elements, and the 14 pieces of music are all played with “the 7 Po” . Through the golden "playhead" in the center of the videos, the audience can see the paintings like a musical score, which accurately restores the rhythm, melody, dynamics, layers, and parameters of the effector...
In the end, I realised that the "wild animal" was actually me.
