【校长专访】澳洲名校乐卓博大学校长Dewar教授：我为什么来中国开设院校办公室？

Recently, it is memorable that La Trobe University in Australia has its own 50th anniversary and launching the LTU China office with Navitas in Beijing. The Vice-Chancellor and President of La Trobe University, Professor Dewar has been interviewed by Studying Abroad Magazine of Guangming Daily.

最近，澳大利亚名校乐卓博大学迎来其五十周年校庆，并在北京开设新办公室。值此之际，作为澳大利亚第一批招收中国留学生的大学——乐卓博大学校长Dewar教授接受《留学》记者专访，浅谈学术感悟。

Could you please share your background with our viewers? And what attracts you to come to La Trobe University and work as the VC?

请您简述教育背景以及从英国前往澳大利亚乐卓博大学担任副校长的原因。

乐卓博大学校长Dewar教授：

 It is a very good question. I am a graduate of the University of Oxford, where I was   also a fellow of Hertford College. Then I taught at the universities in UK, and worked for the London law firms before coming to Australia in 1995. And I held senior leadership positions at Griffith University and the University of Melbourne before taking up the position of Vice-Chancellor of La Trobe.

我毕业于牛津大学,也在赫特福德大学做过研究员。1995年前往澳大利亚之前，我曾在英国当地的一些大学教课，还在伦敦的律师事务所工作过。来到澳大利亚之后，我在格里菲斯大学和墨尔本大学担任过高级领导职务，最近的一份工作就是五年前来到乐卓博大学任职校长，具体来说应该算是有五年半的时间了。

Because La Trobe University is a really interesting university with being innovative, studying differently and beautiful campus. Exactly, it is the most beautiful campus in Australia. And we have the amazing facilities. For example, Agora(Student Central), LIMS(La Trobe Institute of Molecular Science), Sports Complex. The Melbourne campus has the biggest CBD in the local. And it is really important that we do many researches with many global communities.

在我看来，乐卓博大学非常有趣，它充满创造性，丰富的学科教育以及美丽的校园。我觉得这是澳大利亚最美丽的校园了。乐卓博大学还有很多一流的设施设备，例如学生中心，分子科学研究会以及多种多样的运动器材。乐卓博大学的七大校区之一墨尔本校区拥有当地最大的CBD。最重要的是，乐卓博大学还与许多全球性组织和机构合作研究项目。

Professor Dewar, you came to Australia in 1995.There must be many memorable moments in your career in the last 25 years, would you be able to share a few with us?

22年前，您来到澳大利亚。在过去的这段时间里，一定有很多难忘的回忆，可否与《留学》读者一起分享？

 乐卓博大学校长Dewar教授：

I think many things are rememberable, especially La Trobe is fifty years old this year. And we mention that the university has been established in 1967. Long time ago, with seven campus in different places. In this year, we celebrate with a big party, and it is fantastic. All most alumni come back to the campus, such as bankers, leading politician. We have a large group with remarkable graduates from all over the world, in which we can freely share the most leading-edge industry information and up-to-date knowledge.

难忘的故事太多了，尤其是在乐卓博大学任职的这五年中。我们都知道乐卓博大学成立于1967年，在澳大利亚有7个校区。今年，为了庆祝它50岁生日，乐卓博大学举办了大型的派对活动，相当不错。很多校友重返校园，他们大多在各自领域功成名就，比如知名的银行家和政治家。乐卓博大学的校友会已经成为一个大型的群体，将散落在世界各地的学子紧密联系起来，大家自由地分享和互换前沿的行业信息与最新知识。

Now, you have worked at LTU for the past 5 years at LTU, what valuable changes /contributions have you brought to the university or the international higher education?

在乐卓博大学工作的这五年，对于学校自身或者国际教育来说，您觉得乐卓博取得了哪些瞩目的进步？ 

乐卓博大学校长Dewar教授：

Well, the most important point I think is in the last five and a half years the university has proved that it has excellent studying performance. So just last week, La Trobe University received the fantastic news that it has reached now and ranked number 301 in the prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), reached number 360 in the QS World Universities Ranking and number 377 in the Times Higher Education(THE).

我觉得在过去的五年里最大的进步就是乐卓博大学学术成就出众，世界排名有了很大的提高。就在上个礼拜，乐卓博大学已经跻身世界大学学术排名（ARWU）的301位，世界大学排名QS第360位，泰晤士高等教育世界大学排名（THE）的377位。

It is the biggest progress La Trobe has achieved than before. It is important because the ranking is a reputation for an university and their graduates. So it is fantastic. Besides, La Trobe University has become a surface for students from different backgrounds. We have outstanding scholars, academics and teachers. We spare no effort to improve students experience.

这是近几年来，乐卓博大学取得的最大学术进步。在世界上学术排名的进步对于一所大学和它的学生来说都是一个荣誉。这是非常不错的。乐卓博大学为来自世界各地的学生提供学术平台，我们有出色的教授、研究员和教师，并不遗余力地提高学生体验。

So we put a lot of efforts into, for example, improving their innovative abilities and employability. We know most students want to get a good job under the time in the university. In the world, workers are changing quickly. We must be sure that our students have been prepared well for that. So we put a lot of efforts into some programs to teach students needed skills to be employable.

为此，乐卓博在提高学生的创新能力和就业能力上花费很大精力。我们知道很多学生都渴望得到一份不错的工作，但现在就业市场变化多端。我们必须确定每个学生都为就业做好充足准备。因此，乐卓博大学有很多就业项目提高学生就业能力。

But it is not great enough. We believe that the university just train people to be a teacher to teach students how to run their necessary skills and career really is equipped with the skills. There is another example. We hope that multi-disciplines studying is not only worthy the reputation of La Trobe, but also benefit our students. We are very confident that we will continue to move further up within the top 300 universities next year.

这仅仅是不够的，最重要的是教会学生如何运用学到的技能，并找到与之相匹配的工作。我们希望乐卓博大学的学术成就不仅能够与之排名相匹配，而且有益于学生发展。我们也有理由相信，在接下来的几年中，乐卓博大学会继续出发，有望进军全球排名前300 。

You visit to China is part of the 50th anniversary La Trobe World week /and you will also launch the LTU China office. What is your aim of opening an office in China? What Chinese students might benefit from this new development?

值乐卓博大学50周年校庆之际，您访问中国，并将在中国开设办公室。此行的目的是什么？这将对中国学生产生哪些有利影响？

乐卓博大学校长Dewar教授：

I am delighted to be here today for the official opening of La Trobe University’s new China office. I am especially happy that our new home in China is located within the offices of Navitas, with whom we have been partners for close to 15 years. Having the La Trobe and Navitas offices together here in China will help us to work collaboratively to increase our recruitment and partnership activities.

今天，乐卓博大学在中国开设办公室，尤其是在与我们合作15年之久的纳维教育开设中国办公室，我非常开心。我们与纳维一起致力于增加乐卓博大学的中国生源以及开展一系列的合作活动。

La Trobe is a leading university that has world-class researchers across many disciplines, and we will greatly increase our activity in China through this new office. We’re also ranked in the Top 10 research universities in Australia according to the Australian Government’s Excellence in Research for Australia ranking.

乐卓博大学是澳大利亚的一流大学，我们也拥有许多世界顶尖的学科教授。通过在中国开设办公室，我们希望能够极大地拓展在中国的学术活动。根据澳大利亚政府颁布的研究型大学优秀学术排名来看，乐卓博大学位于前十名。

These are wonderful results that give us great confidence in the future of our University. We are now a truly global university, with 190,000 alumni based in more than 100 countries around the world.

这些荣誉让我们对乐卓博大学的未来充满信心。乐卓博大学也是一所真正的国际化大学，我们在全球100多个国家有超过19万人次的校友团体。

As we look to build on these achievements, we are developing the University's new strategic plan, which will replace our Future Ready plan that expires at the end of this year. The next plan will set us up to be more outward looking and engage with the rest of the world, especially in China.

基于之前取得的这些成绩，值得一提的是我们也有一些新的学术计划，用于替代即将在2017年年底结束的“为未来做准备”项目。新的学术项目将把眼光扩展到全球，与全球各地开展合作，尤其是中国。

La Trobe has a long record of engagement with China. In the early 1980s, we were among the first Australian universities to admit students from the People’s Republic of China. In the mid-1990s, we had Australia's largest off-shore presence in the country. In 2015, we celebrated thirty years of our better partnership with East China Normal University in Shanghai.

其实，乐卓博大学与中国的关系源远流长。早在上世纪八十年代，乐卓博就成为澳大利亚第一批接受中国留学生的大学。到了九十年代中期，我们已经成为在澳大利亚拥有最多中国留学生的大学。2015年，我们还与华东师范大学一起庆祝合作三十周年。

This provides us with an excellent platform of engagement on which to build. With the establishment of our new office in China, we are formalising our commitment to make Asia the key focus of our international engagement –and China lies at the centre of that regional focus. By engaging strategically with China we are seeking a set of improvements across the full range of University activities. Our next five year strategy will guide our work during a crucial period for the long term future of the University, and opening this office in Beijing will form a key element of our future plans and is part of our longstanding commitment to China.

这些过往，都为乐卓博与中国的合作提供广大的平台。随着中国办公室的成立，我们正在逐步让亚洲成为国际合作的关键地区，而中国更是重中之重。通过与中国的战略化合作，我们的学术活动也会取得全方面的进步。下一个五年计划将指导我们渡过大学未来长足发展的关键时期，在北京开设的办公室不仅是与中国合作的重要一步，也是乐卓博大学未来发展的关键组成部分。
