Global media  focus on migrating elephant

A herd of 15 wild Asian elephants that left Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve in the south of Yunnan province last year entered the provincial capital of Kunming last week.


Now the wandering wild Asian elephant herd that has caught global media attention.

“A herd of wandering Asian elephants which has achieved fame in China has been spotted taking a nap in a forest.”BBC journalist said.
The Asian elephant is an endangered species. China has only about 300 wild elephants, mainly in the south of Yunnan province.
Scientists say this is the furthest any of the wild elephants there have travelled from the habitat.

“The animals have been eating millions of dollars worth of crops, damaging buildings and poking their trunks through doors and windows during their march.”BBC journalist said.

“At least a dozen buzzing drones monitor them around the clock. Wherever they go, they're escorted by police. And when they eat or sleep, they're watched by millions online.”


“For more than a week, China has been gripped by a new internet sensation: a herd of 15 marauding elephants, who are large, lost and wrecking havoc in the country's southwest.”

CNN reported that chinese are particularly charmed by the herd.Human stars have even tried to ride off the elephants' celebrity. Some of them even picked up and ate leftover pineapple to attract viewers.

NBC said:“Major global media are chronicling the herd’s more than yearlong, 500-kilometer trek from their home in a wildlife reserve in mountainous southwest Yunnan province to the outskirts of the provincial capital of Kunming.”
Now Twitter and YouTube are full of clips of their various antics, particularly those of two calves who slipped into an irrigation ditch and had to be helped out by older members of the group.
