About Soochow University

Located in the ancient city of Suzhou, also known as "Paradise on Earth", Soochow University is a key provincial comprehensive university supported by the national “211 Project”. Founded in 1900, it was the first university in China to adopt modern university system, the first to start law education, the first to provide postgraduate programs and confer Master’s Degree, and the first to publish academic journals. Today, it offers a whole range of programs in 12 major disciplines: philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management and art.

Home to nearly 50,000 students, both undergraduate and graduate, the university has 24 schools and colleges, offering 134 undergraduate programs plus nearly 100 postgraduate ones. There are over 5000 faculty members and staff. Among them, 7 are academicians. It is made up of three major campuses: the Tiancizhuang campus, the Dushu Lake campus and the Yangcheng Lake campus. The three campuses cover a vast area of 2.5 million square meters.

The university maintains multiple international partnerships with over 170 universities and institutes in over 30 countries and regions around the world. Over 2000 international students from 60 countries and regions are enrolled in the university every year. In 2007, the Confucius Institute at Portland was co-established by Soochow University and Portland State University. In 2010, the university joined the national “20+20 China-Arica University Cooperation Plan”. In 2011, Soochow University in Laos was established, making Soochow University the first university in China to establish an overseas higher educational institution.

According to Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2017, Soochow University is ranked No. 13 in China, and No.72 in Asia. It was also identified as Nature Index 2016 Rising Star due to its outstanding performance in the world of science.

苏州大学坐落于素有“人间天堂”之称的历史文化名城苏州，是国家“211工程”重点建设的省属重点综合性大学。苏州大学前身是1900年创办的东吴大学，是中国最早以现代大学学科体系举办的大学，也是最先开展法学（英美法）专业教育、最早开展研究生教育并授予硕士学位，第一家创办学报的大学。苏州大学现已发展成一所学科门类齐全的综合性大学，涵盖哲学、经济学、法学、教育学、文学、历史学、理学、工学、农学、医学、管理学、艺术学等十二大学科门类。

学校设有24个学院（部），134个本科专业和近百个硕士、博士学位授权点。学校拥有各类在校生近5万名，教职工5000多名，其中两院院士6人、外籍院士1人。学校现有天赐庄校区、独墅湖校区、阳澄湖校区三大校区，占地面积250余万平方米。

学校实施“国际知名带动国内一流”的国际化发展战略，先后与30多个国家、地区的170余所高校和研究机构建立了校际交流关系。学校每年招收来自60余个国家或地区的留学生2000余名。2007年，与美国波特兰州立大学合作建立了波特兰州立大学孔子学院；2010年，入选教育部“中非高校20+20合作计划”，援建尼日利亚拉各斯大学；2011年，在老挝成功创办中国第一家境外高校——“老挝苏州大学”。

根据英国《泰晤士报高等教育》发布的2017亚洲大学排名，苏州大学在中国大陆入围高校中排第13名，亚洲排名第72。学校还被《Nature Index 2016》报告评为“全球上升最快的大学”。
