The Chamber’s Financial Services Focus Group is delighted to welcome a panel of leading experts on China’s economy to share with us their insights on China’s role in the world economy and their commentary on the critical issues facing China today.  Our guest speakers bring a wealth of China experience that covers financial services, policy and research, as well as investigative journalism.


Keynote speaker Prof. Se Yan is Senior China Economist at Standard Chartered Bank (China) Limited, as well as Research Professor at Guanghua School of Management, Peking University. With an expansive background in economic research spanning more than 15 years, Prof. Se Yan has been globally acclaimed for across the academic hemisphere for his contributions to academia and policy. Apart from research and teaching, he has acted as a policy consultant to China’s government. Members will have the unique opportunity to discuss pressing economic issues to the finest detail with Prof. Se Yan. 


Moderator and panelist James McGregor is Chairman of APCO Worldwide's Greater China Region, and also author, journalist and businessman. James is a professional speaker and regular television commentator who specialises in China's business, politics and society. Complementing expertise with expertise, James’s economic knowledge has also led to the publication of two globally recognised books within the financial sector. Building on his expansive set of experiences, members will benefit from James’ unique insights and forecasts on China’s economic future.


Also joining in the panel discussion is Prof. Hong Yan, Professor of Finance at Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance, and Director for China Hedge Fund Research Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Prof. Hong Yan’s proficiency in understanding complex issues across the financial spectrum has led to him chairing major conferences, including the China International Conference in Finance. Globally acclaimed for his expert research published in numerous financial journals, all members will have the opportunity to listen to Prof. Hong Yan’s latest insights into China’s economic outlook.

About the Speakers



Prof. Se Yan

Senior Economist, China, Standard Chartered Bank (China) Limited
Guanghua School of Management, Peking University


Prof. Se Yan completed his PhD in Economics at UCLA and joined the Guanghua School of Management, Peking University in 2008. He is a Research Professor in the Department of Applied Economics. Prior to his doctoral studies, Yan received his B.A. in international economics and M.A. in economic history at Peking University in 2000 and 2002, and M.A. in economics at UCLA in 2004. Prof. Yan's research specialties are economic history, macroeconomics and Chinese economy. Prof. Yan's research has been widely recognised by international academia. He joined the Standard Chartered Bank in July 2015 as a Senior China Economist based in Beijing. He has demonstrated strength in connecting academic research with on-the-ground analysis that helps to inform policy debate. Apart from research and teaching, he has acted as a policy consultant to China’s government.


James McGregor

Chairman, APCO Worldwide, Greater China Region


James McGregor is chairman of APCO Worldwide's greater China region and author of two highly regarded books: No Ancient Wisdom, No Followers: The Challenges of Chinese Authoritarian Capitalism and One Billion Customers: Lessons from the Front Lines of Doing Business in China. He was a veteran reporter for The Wall Street Journal, and prior to joining APCO, he was founder and CEO of a China-focused consulting and research firm for hedge funds. He also held previous roles as a senior adviser for Ogilvy Public Relations China and the China managing partner for GIV Venture Partners. 

Mr. McGregor was a reporter in the Washington bureau of Knight-Ridder newspapers during the Reagan administration. After serving as the Taiwan bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal from 1987 to 1990 and China bureau chief from 1990 to 1994, he spent seven years building Dow Jones’ media business in China as CEO of Dow Jones’ China. During this time, he established CNBC in China and created the Chinese language website of wsj.com, Dow Jones’ Chinese-language newswires, Chinese stock-market indexes and the first weekly business-television show in China. He was also a Series A investor in Sohu.com and served on the Sohu board for several years. 

Mr. McGregor is a professional speaker, regular television and radio commentator and a contributor of essays and opinion articles for a variety of publications. He has lived in China for more than two decades and can speak and read Chinese. He was an active member of the Board of Governors of the American Chamber of Commerce in China (AmCham) for nearly a decade and served as chairman in 1996. He also previously served as chairman of the U.S. Government Relations Committee for AmCham, and is currently a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Atlantic Council.


Hong Yan

Professor of Finance, Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance, and Director for China Hedge Fund Research Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University


Hong Yan is Professor of Finance at Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (SAIF), and director for China Hedge Fund Research Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, where he served as Deputy Dean and as Deputy Director for China Academy of Financial Research. Before he joined SAIF full-time, Prof. Yan was a tenured faculty member at the Moore School of Business in the University of South Carolina, USA. Previously, he was on the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin and spent a year as a visiting academic scholar at the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC). He also held visiting appointments at the University of Hong Kong, the U.S. Federal Reserve Board and Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business.

Professor Yan holds a Ph.D. in Finance from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from the University of Michigan. His research focuses on the areas of credit risk, asset pricing, derivatives securities, portfolio choice, and risk management. He also studies financial intermediaries such as mutual funds, hedge funds and financial analysts. Prof. Yan has published in top academic journals such as Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, and Review of Financial Studies. His research has been recognized by the Q-group Grant in 2007, the Crowell Prize in Investment Management in 2010 and a number of Best Paper Awards at international academic conferences. 

Professor Yan currently serves as a Managing Editor of the International Review of Finance. He chaired the program committee for the China International Conference in Finance (CICF) in 2013 and 2014, and has served on program committees for several major international conferences. He reviews manuscripts for more than dozen internationally renowned academic journals in economics and finance. In addition, he sits on the advisory boards of several academic and financial institutions and was selected into Shanghai’s “Thousand Talents Plan”.
