PLAN8T x Yunhe Centre
——
Summer 2021 Artist-in-Residence
Sub-Residency Artists recruitment

On June 16, PLAN8T officially announced the recruitment plan for "The Invisible Sounds" Summer 2021 Artist-In-Residence Program. In addition to the original residence location in Yuanda City, Changsha, the program specially set up sub-residency, linking with Yunhe Centre, aiming to introduce collision and intermingling of diverse voices, to expand multi-dimensional dialogue, and to show infinite possibilities of sound as media beyond time and space.

The residential site is in the highest point of Zhonglu Tibetan Village, Danba County, Ganzi Prefecture, Sichuan Province, also among Hengduan Mountain, Southwest China. The village, by the Dadu River and at the foot of the holy mountain, is the aboriginal habitation of Jiarong Tibetans. People here are telling legends about Moerduo Mountain, singing Dingmu folk songs, and inheriting the Himalayan belief. While there is no written text in Jiarong dialect, local tradition passes from generation to generation by oral communication. Therefore, sounds become crucial carriers in the heritage of Jiarong culture.

The address of Yunhe Centre also echoes Planet P8, where is the middle ground between industry and nature, the urban and the rural. We expect this program will connect the local community with art, transcending boundaries among different disciplines and media. We believe more discussion into the practice of artworks about public education and social change could promote the sustainable development of our society. We encourage artists in residence to weave local cultural heritage and oral history with sound, to engage indigenous Tibetans with the sound collection, archiving and creation process, and finally contribute to sound culture in the community.

Just as Hengduan Mountain is rich in biodiversity, Jiarong area, situated in Tibetan-Yi Corridor, retains diverse cultures. From the view of the mainstream, they might be the sounds from the margin, which are neglected and invisible. However, with careful listening, we could explore the sounds from eco, from culture, from the other, from the transition... waiting to be collected, recorded, transformed into various forms, and reach more hears.

Yunhe Centre will provide:

· Accommodation and studio.

· Recording equipment.

· Experience the daily life of valley residents in the Tibetan forest.

· The natural environment and humanities resources.

· Local guide and fieldwork support from Yunhe Centre staff.

· Exhibition space in Yunhe Centre and the local community.

PLAN8T will provide:

· Organizing opportunities for exchange and mutual evaluation of the artist-in-residence collective.

· Support and assistance for offline exhibition creation.

· Media promotion during the residency and the exhibition.

· Provide a creation budget for the final presentation in the exhibition according to the scale of the project

By embracing the holistic mind, body, heart learning principles, we offer programs that cultivate eco-intelligence and equip youth with visions and skills to become future glocal leaders, change-makers, and stewards of nature.

The meaning of Yunhe 雲合 in Chinese is "Gathering of the clouds". More than a school, Yunhe Centre is a communal gathering place for both local communities and international artists, scholars, and social innovators who share the same passion for being friends with nature.
