Bi Shumin, female, was born in Xinjiang’s Yining city in October 1952. Her ancestry originates from the Wendeng district of the city of Weihai in Shandong Province. When she was 17 years old, she went to Ngari Prefecture in Tibet to serve in the military as a medic and military doctor. She returned to Beijing in 1980 and served as an attending physician in internal medicine. Later on she earned a Master’s Degree in Literature and a Doctorate in Psychology from Beijing Normal University. Her first work An Elegy for the Kunlun Mountains was published in 1987. Her signature works include the medium length novel An Appointment with Death, and the full-length novels Red Prescription, Rescuing Breasts, and Female Psychologist. The famous writer Wang Meng has called her “a white robed angel in the world of literature”.
Bi Shumin’s writing primarily has to do with the lives of doctors, psychological healing, and young people’s growing up. Compassion blended with professional psychological knowledge materializes into stories that slowly unfold and shock people’s hearts. She looks squarely at death and blood, and calmly and rationally prescribes one effective prescription after another for readers. Her novels possess the weight of youth\the density of life along with speculations on death, and depict the bravery and depth of life.
Red Precription tells the story of Jian Fangning, the director of a drug rehabilitation center, who saves many drug addicts. Research and implementation of an original Chinese medicine drug rehabilitation program has already seen results. However, under the manipulation of a female drug user named Zhuang Yu, the Director also ends up becoming addicted to a drug that is impossible to quit. Jian Fangning declares to the whole world by committing suicide that human will far surpasses the powerful force of drugs. The story unfolds from the personal experiences of the director’s friend Shen Ruoyu. Out of curiosity Shen sneaks into the hospital disguised as a patient, and comes across all kinds of drug addicts. In the end she cannot bear the heavy psychological toll, and leaves the drug rehabilitation center in a panic.
Female Psychologist is concerned with the spiritual home and psychological health of modern Chinese people. Its female protagonist, He Dun,opens a psychological clinic initially to comfort and free herself from the humiliation that her hometown brought upon her. However, facing various kinds of spiritually bewildered case subjects every day, and listening to them recount their true stories in addition to her own emotional conundrums, He Dun nearly has a mental breakdown. An authoritative psychologist attempts all kinds of methods to “supervise” her, and in the end he uses an illegal method to discover the crux of her emotional problems, which had been hidden away for a long time. This enables her to start a new life. However, when she comes across the authority figure from the past while pursuing advanced studies, she says to him: Your treatment was completely wrong. I’m going to sue you.
Rescuing Breasts tells the story of Cheng Yuanqing, a Phd in psychology who has returned home from overseas, who is subsidized by a pharmaceutical company, publishes advertisements to recruit breast cancer patients to form a pyschological treatment group. Cadre members, civil servants, master students, laid-off female workers, white collar beauties, a mysterious visitor whose gender is unclear...people from a variety of professions and with various identities gather together. A common illness makes them closely unite into a group. Each of their complex experiences and internal struggles enable them to collide and grow within the group. This is China’s first novel on psychological treatment written by a psychologist. It explores the problem of the spiritual dignity of cancer patients, and is imbued with the spirit of humanistic concern.
An Appointment with Death is a novel that directly confronts and depicts death. In the book the author interviews the terminally ill patients of the “Linzhong Xiang (on the verge of the final flight)” Hospital along with their friends, family, and doctors. One real picture after another of life at death’s door emerges throughout the book. Behind the phenomenon of death lies the beauty of human nature.
