Chinese Furious Over Flag Error at Olympic Games
Chinese netizens were up in arms yesterday after it transpired that the Chinese flags brought in by the organizers contained a subtle, face-losing error.
While we’d forgive you for not immediately noticing the subtle mistake, CCTV took to Weibo, declaring “The national flag is the symbol of a country. No mistakes are allowed!” The mistake in question – the four smaller stars on the flag are not pointing towards the main star.
The issue was raised yesterday after Olympic shooters Du Ling and Yi Siling brought home China’s first medals. As they stepped onto the podium, the flags hoisted above them featured the grave mistake. The issue was later compounded when Chinese swimmer Sun Yang collected his silver medal and it became apparent that seemingly all the Chinese flags used at the Rio Games appear to contain stars that are angled incorrectly.
“I’m not trying to be picky because of obsessive compulsive disorder,” said CCTV Cui Yongyuan on Weibo. “But this is the national flag…it’s a principle that even primary school students could understand."
Unfortunately, while we’re sure Chinese netizens would love to keep getting up on their high-horses about this, the SCMP reports that, embarrassingly, all the national flags used at the Rio Olympics were made in China.
Maybe we’ll finally see stricter quality controls implemented across the country now that some Chinese factory managed to make an entire nation lose face, subjecting themselves to 5 minutes of national humiliation.
