Australian Olympian Calls Sun Yang Drug Cheat - Netizens Flip
Chinese netizens have been quick to slew a flurry of abusive comments after Australia's Olympic gold medalist Mack Horton called China's Sun Yang a 'drug cheat'.
Horton's comments were not exactly ill-founded. Sun tested positive in 2014 for using a banned substance and was subsequently banned from the sport for three months. Sun claimed that the drugs he was taking at the time were to deal with a heart issue, although Horton doesn't seem to have bought that excuse, reportedly saying: "I just have a problem with athletes who have tested positive and are still competing."
The comments have sent many Chinese people over the edge, demanding that the Aussie apologize for insulting the Chinese hero and flooding his social media with abusive posts. "You are too complacent and will die quickly," said one commenter, while another said: ”It can be a big shame on your whole country."
Sun Yang could be seen crying shortly after losing to Horton in yesterday's 400m freestyle swim heat, having failed to defend the gold he won at London 2012.
