Turn up the Heat at the Hutong Quarantine Cook-Off as a Family

As Beijing’s schools continue to exist in a state of educational limbo, parents have turned to edu-taining their kids with all sorts of daily activities at home. One of the best (and most practical) is creating masterpieces together in the kitchen. It’s where kids can explore their creativity, learn more about where their food comes from, and enjoy some hands-on action.
As part of their four-week Quarantine Cook-Off starting on Monday, March 23, The Hutong will be giving you four recipes to follow at home. Challenge the family to create the dish of the week, and turn the competition up to 11, as there will be a chance to win weekly prizes.
Here’s how it works
Cook the dish
Take a photo (remember plating and good lighting will help give you an edge)
Post your photo on Instagram using the hashtag #QuarantineCookOff #beijingkids #TheHutong #thebeijinger or post it on WeChat and share a screenshot with TheHutong’s official WeChat account: TheHutongBeijing
Every week the winner will be chosen by a panel of The Hutong’s chefs based on creativity, plating, photography and Instagram/WeChat likes. Those winners will then be announced on The Hutong’s WeChat, Facebook, and Instagram accounts.
The Hutong’s Quarantine Cook-Off officially starts tomorrow. The first dish in the competition is Yunnanese 黑三剁 which directly translates to ‘black’ (the predominant color of the dish), ‘three’ (the number of main ingredients), and ‘minced’ (how the ingredients are prepared).
This thrifty, fresh, and veggie-packed dish is usually served with rice, congee, noddles, or if you fancy, wrap them in a lettuce leaf for a nice fresh crunch.
Scan the QR code in the poster for details about the competition, and step by step instruction on this week’s recipe. Also, be sure to follow beijingkids (Instagram: @beijingkids, WeChat ID: beijing-kids) and The Hutong (Instagram: @thehutong, Wehcat ID: TheHutongBeijing) on social media.
